I am a pianist and worship leader that is writing new music. I would like to find some basic equipment for a home recording studio so I can make my own tracks and recordings for church use. ( I am the entire orchestra at this time- praying in musicians). I have a Roland piano, but it has no other sounds or rhythms. anyone have any suggestions on what I should be looking for, basic costs, or even have used equipment for sale ( limited budget of course). I'm in a situation very much like yours...just got done making a background track for the Youth choir to sing Sunday.
I have an older G5 Mac and use Finale for notation, and Logic Express to record vocals and instrumental tracks. Also have a M-Audio 88-note keyboard with a USB port, so don't have to use a Midi interface. Finale and Logic both have learning curves, but they're well worth it - and they have software sound fonts, all digital, so you can record and mix in the computer.

I don't have the most elegant setup (no ProTools or audio interface), but it works.

Forgot to mention - both Logic (for the Mac) and Finale (Mac + PC) have less expensive/simpler versions, so start with these if you are on a tight budget.

Also check out eBay or Craigslist for used gear (but try it first, if you can, before you buy).

There is nothing wrong with the Windows installer. Try it before you disregard it. I've been using it on Windows for about four years.

If you have the money, invest in an Apple iMAC and then use a Midi chord to plug into it.  You can record, turn your computer into a personal recording studio.
