Male voices

Hey, does anyone know anything I can do help build some harmony and/or vocal skills in my male choir?   I tried them on singing the scale (in which the song was in------trying to match the notes---it helped a little)  Any helpful suggestions will highly be appreciated.

Have some guys in our beginning choir - 1 Baritone who knows Tenor parts but can't sing too high, 1 lady 'Tenorette", and three Basses who seem to be in the 'Monotone' section. I tried to teach Tenor parts (too high) then told the Basses to stand behind the Sopranos and sing melody. All seem to be more on pitch when singing melody, especially on Congregational-type choruses.....

If they don't have any concept of tone, pitch, harmony, etc...your best bet is just to  have them all sing in unison. It will be easier on everbody.

Sometimes it can be easier to get them to sing two-part harmony instead of three-part.  Maybe have the lower voices do the basic melody and have the higher voices do an accenting part above it.

That's basically what happens with our male chorus. A few sing in the harmonic key higher and some in the harmonic key lower. I guess it's just natural....lol!

No, two part is not natural. It takes alot of paitience, and hard work. Who ever is directing has to really listen to your men, and figure out who can sing the high tenor, who can sing the mid tenor, and then the low, and if you got two or more , that nice baritone.Our Male Chorus loves to listen to Quartet groups. So we kind of fashioned our selves that way. We dont really try to do chior bases songs, like say something by TONE', or kirk Franklin,Isereal,Mary Mary, etc, etc, if you get my drift. We stick to songs by the Cantons,Darrel Mcfaddon,Lee Williams,Mighty Clouds of Joy,the Soul Serchers,just to name a few. I have seen that it was easier for the guys to connect with a male based group then with a contemparary group. We sit and Listen first, then we get the words and practice, each ones parts. And we end up with a three part harmony. And sometimes a 4 part, cause i can sing high tenor part. Just keep trying, and like i said, stick to All Male Gospel Group songs, cause my guys wont sing a song if it's a song by a woman.Me myself i dont care, if a song touches my heart, than i want to sing it, but some men are funny about that.Keep praying, and keep trying, they'll get it, but do break all the guys up into there natural parts, then it should be alot easier.
