Hello fellow musicians.. I've been pondering back and forth trying to decide whether to go to school for music, take private lessons, or learn from instructional dvd's..With the economy the way that it is would I have job stability in music or would i have to work and do music as a side hustle...what are the benefits for obtaining a degree in music vs. private lessons etc. Should I get my degree in physical therapy assistants and take lessons on the side..or should I get a music degree...Can a music degree hold it down alone financially .....help me out please

Welcome!

This doesn't answer your question. But after I changed my major from psychology back to music. AAALLL people kept telling me was there is no money in teaching music and blah, blah, blah. That discouraged me a 'lil bit, but I've got visions!!!  :D I haven't really told anyone my plan. Probably just one person because we have the same interests, all I tell people is I wanna teach music.

I also wanna open up a hair salon. But I gotta figure out how to work that in somewhere.

Anyways, yeah.... I don't have an answer to your question. I kinda woke up in a talkative mood! LOL

Welcome to LGM! I think it totally depends on what your career goals are coupled with your analysis of the economy. So if your career goal with physical therapy assistant then I would invest more to that career than music. What do you want to do more of? What do you want to me your life's work? To me answers to those questions will help narrow down what to do.

I'll use myself as an example. I'm a musician and right now I'm lead muscian at my church and that brings in a nice income. At the same time I'm in school working on my Bachelor of Arts in Human Services. I eventually would like to be a case manager and/or social worker. At the same time I'm beginning to feel the call to some work of professional ministry. This will determine what I will go to graduate school for but I'm taking year off to work and allowing God to lead me. A lot of folk told me I should to to school for music but honestly, I don't know how many more years I want to do music ministry. Right now I don't see myself in music ministry for a lot of years. But right now I am thinking about getting on path this summer to become complete musician if I ever decide to get serious about becoming a minister of music.

In a nutshell I think it depends on what you want to do for the long haul. It frustrates me personally when I see people go through 4 years of undergrad and don't even work in degree arena simply because they never wanted to.

Just my 2 cents.

Welcome to LGM!!!

There is money in any career, you just gotta know how to work it. Besides, who said that you have to make a whole heap of money to be happy. Some people can live off a little and be just as happy as the people who got a lot.

I'd say do what you feel in your heart is right for you. Even if you are the only one who believes in your dream, GO FOR IT. You will be much happier than if you picked something just to make a lot of money.

And stop using the ecomony as an excuse. God owns this world and He can bless at anytime He sees fit, bad economy or not. God is still in the job-giving business. God is still in the blessing business. Just trust Him to lead and guide your paths and you will come out on top.

Welcome to LGM.

Regarding which path you take in learning your craft, I'd say it probably depends upon which career path you plan to take, musically.  If you want to eventually play for a symphony orchestra, you'll likely want to be classically trained by a teacher.  If you want to be a good jazz or gospel musician, any of a variety of learning methods may work well for you, including (but not limited to) a structured learning environment.

If I were you, I'd ask myself this question first: "What do I want to do, professionally?  Or, stated differently, what do I want to do with my life?"  The answer to that question may help put you in the right direction in answering your other questions.
