Procrastination As Spiritual Issue
« on: February 26, 2010, 06:45:19 AM »
Not to sound "woe is me" and all of that but procrastination is a problem that I've had all throughout college and even in Senior Year I still have that problem. Has anybody else had procrastination as a major issue in your life? How did you effectively deal with it/overcome it?

Do you consider procrastination as spiritual issue? I've read in one book and in article that procrastination happens to many of us because of a fear of failure. I'm just interested in hearing some perspectives on it.

I procrastinate because of ADD. When something interests me, I have no problem getting started on it in a reasonable timeframe. If its boring, daunting, tedious, irrelevant, or unrewarding - no matter how high the stakes are, I will put it off until the last possible minute. In fact, my brain often won't cooperate until the last possible minute.

I don't consider it a spiritual issue in my life, but I believe it can be spiritual for some. Its a matter of discipline, and discipline is spiritual.
When you're in love you don't want to fall asleep bc reality is finally better than your dreams.

Yeah discipline is what I lack and I know that to make it in real world (already being there right now) discipline will be absolutely critical.

Oh, and I'm no expert and I haven't written any books, but I think while some may procrastinate because of a fear of failure, most do it because of indolence, indifference, distractions or lack of interest.

I think it may be a spiritual issue for some.

I procrastinate out of a fear of failing and indifference. Its something I need to pray over cuz lately I have had a very indifferent take on life. I just don't seem to care that much about stuff. :-\

You're not alone. When I came back from Ghana I felt so empowered and motivated and since being back in US going on 4 weeks, I think now I'm back to being unmotivated. Why? Many causes but won't waste time going into them.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you feel indifferent?

I procrastinate out of the fear of failure and cause whatever it is bores me. or because I get depressed

The crazy thing about it is (at least for me) procrastination pretty much ensures failure.

Honey, I say this in an absolute spirit of love with no intent to harm: don't speak depression over your life. There is a big difference between having the blues and being depressed. I totally understand feeling down and that can lead to procrastination (sometimes that's me) but never depression. Don't speak that over your life!

In answer to Church's question, I feel indifferent cuz i have reached a critical point in my life and it seems like the decisions I have to make are going to take quite tough and my natural defense mechanism is indifference.

That kind of makes sense I guess. :)

I understand where you're coming from, but I disagree with you.

But for what it's worth, I'm sure there are many that would agree with you (probably those who have never dealt with depression, which is a real illness - not a "feeling").

I don't think it's speaking it over your life. If you are depressed you are depressed. That's the best way to get help. I few years back I learned I was depressed through prayer. I told God about it many nights.  :D My main issue with depression was past hurts which led me to think on past failures. There is a remedy for depression it takes time to get out of it. When I was depressed I could barely pray. I felt spiritually drained but I prayed anyway. I was even upset with God in my heart but wouldn't admit it to myself. He had to show me. I saved alot of money through prayer.  :D

I've had a habit if procrastinating a good portion of my life because I really wasn't taught enough how to deal with problems. Later on I became good at getting the job done at the last minute or under pressure. Now I procrastinated with things because either I feel something else is more important at the time or I'm just tired and don't feel like doing anything. I used to have a fear of failure to a certain degree. Now I'm more cautious of decisions and their long term affects. Some people see it as fear I see it as wisdom. For example some one could say you should start a group and get out on the road to become famous. I might like to do that but at this point in my life I'm thinking about starting a family. I have no problem if I got out there and failed but I'm not willing to take a chance and then have to start over in life. I'd rather get established first.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

interesting. So depression is an illness?

Of course one implication of my new found discovery is that folks who say "I am depressed" may actually be merely sad that things aren't going their way.

I procrastinate most times because of lack of interest. BUT I do some of my best work under pressure.

Yes, depression is an illness. That's a medically documented fact, not my opinion.

And yes, many people who say "I am depressed" are actually just feeling sad or overwhelmed or down or having a bad day or focused on the wrong thing. Depression, on the other hand, is not a feeling; it's a condition.

D:

This is me.

I was told something by a friend two weeks ago, that has stuck with me: "An imperfect plan executed vigorously is better than a perfect plan executed too late."

After hearing that, I had a light-bulb moment. I'm still fighting the urge to have everything perfect, vice getting things done. It's an uphill battle, but I can see progression.

But it seems like everything in our society is about perfection. Good is not good enough.
