If cost is a factor and you just want self-contained sounds and simple programming, I'd say pick up a classic Alesis SR-16(about $150) or the newer SR-18(about $260).  Or you can look into the BOSS(Roland) brand.  If you can get to a music store and get your hands on one to try out, that will help.  If not, go on YouTube and look up Alesis(and BOSS) Drum machines and you can hear them.  Now if you want to go all out, look into the Akai MPC-500 for around $600.  You'll have to provide/sample your own sounds, but that allows you to put exactly what you want into the machine.  You cannot go wrong with an MPC.

If you haven't made your purchase yet, will you be using this drum machine away from your computer? When I can use my laptop, I run drum tracks through Propellerhead Reason (but any program that can play loops). When I can't use my laptop, I use my Korg Pandora PX5D, which doubles as an audio interface to plug my bass into my laptop and as a drum machine.

If you're still shopping, I ran across this new product.  The Akai XR20.  This is what you want.  It runs in the $300 range.  Stop looking, this is it.

Yo that Akai is hot! Are you getting into drum programming or looking for something you can plug your bass into?

If your willing to part with $300 then check out the Korg PX5D. I first owned the PX4D, but had to upgrade when I saw this. You an effects unit that is also a drum machine that is also a audio interface for your computer. Check out the link below:

Hey Kev, thanks for the input. im kinda feeling the the Akai RX20 and the Boss 880. The MPC 500 has got my attention as well. I don't want a machine thats going to take me away from my Bass Practices trying to figure out how to work it. I didn't really feel the korg. maybe I need to investigate it more, but so far it didn't grab me. Thanks for you input.
peace and blessings.
