Which is better?? ( Please Please Comment)
« on: July 17, 2009, 12:13:14 PM »
I am about to purchase a new keyboard. I'm trying to decide between a Yamaha motif(76 Key) and a Roland Fantom G7. I played on both before and I like the Hammond B3 sounds on the Fantom better than the motifs organ sounds. But the fantom seems more complicated than the motif.
The main sounds i'm looking for are a B3 sound and also some skat sounds (and of couse everything in between). I know the fantom has them but what about the motif?
Please leave your honest opinion and some insight into each keyboard.
I appreciate your thoughts and help.
                                             Thanks in advanced

My next keyboard is definitely going to be a Motif because the sounds are just so crisp and real. I have the Yamaha MO8 which is kinda like the second cousin to the Motif...I guess but it is nothing compared to the Motif in my opinion. I play mostly the B3 sounds too by the way. ;)

Motif doesent have a scat sound. It may have the "choir oohs", but its nothing compared to the roland scat.

I use a fantom x8 and is pleased with it, traded a motif classic for it. Both are good boards most players on the site use motif, however the fantoms are not complicated. I found it hard for me to sequence ont the motif, but right out of the box I laid tracks with the fantom.

Get what works best for you.

A big thanks to everyone who commented. I believe I know which one I'm going to get now.  ;D
But chevonee do you know if there are any B3 sounds on the motif?

The motif has good organ sounds, if that is something that you are looking for. I have the Motif es7 and I love it. I love splitting and layering different sounds on it. However, I have messed around on the Fantom and I like it also, but if I had to pick I would go with the Motif, but both of them will do what you are wanting to do with your new keyboard, and I know that whichever one you get you will be satisfied with.

Actually if you know how to work the MO, you have no problems working the Motif.

I have to say Fantom if you talking about scat sounds. I believe Jamal Hartwell (gospelkeyboard) had a scat voice for the motif but I don't know if it's a close to the roland version or not. Motif does have B3 sounds. You can use the sliders as drawbars.

I have a Motif XS7(two years plus) and a Roland Fantom X6.  The Motif XS is a sweet keyboard with features enough to keep one occupied for many years.  The only complaint that I have with the Yamaha is its output.  It is somewhat low.  I guess also the weight if you are going to be moving it around a lot. I sometimes wish that I had gotten a 61. The 76 keys are nice but it is heavy in it's case.  If the output doesn't bother you, you will love the Yamaha. It is hard to find anyone who regrets buying one.  The sounds are killer. (no scat that I have found)

The Fantom X is nice too but I can't speak concerning the G.  I wouldn't be angry if I had the X as an only board, but I like the Motif much better. It might be unfair to compare the Fantom X to the Motif XS.  To me the Fantom is easier to get around on than the Yamaha but it is not nearly as comprehensive. Sound is so very subjective, but to me the Yamaha has much better sounds.  Again I mention, I have the Fantom X and I have no experience with the G.
