Hillsong is in the genre of CCM.

Going in reverse, yes CCM is what you called it. There's some gospel and blues progressions in CCM but, for the most part, it's pretty straight forward stuff.

You'd have to listen more to songs in the gospel style in order to hear those progressions and blues riffs, etc.

Speaking faecetiously (I actually like some CCM) - :D :D :D

Recipe for CCM:

Take 1 Blues/Jazz/Gospel song.

Lose the organ - put annoying woodblock/cowbell percussion and guitar strums front and center.

Remove any sus7, dim7, aug, m7, b5, 9th, 11th, 13th or other altered/complex/interesting chords. NO CHROMATIC MOVEMENT! Keys can do pads but NO tritone voicings. No more than one chord per measure. Sprinkle in a few sus chords here and there.

Bland out the vocals (take out Gospel tone, call-and-response, melismas, choir parts, etc.). Add a little whine. Auto-tune as needed.

Dumb down the lyrics - make sure the same phrase is repeated at least 4 times in the chorus so it burns into the brain. Ditto with the pre-chorus and bridge - you can even use the same chords as on the verse or chorus, no one will notice. On the verses you can cut loose with the pseudo-romantic 'boyfriend' lyrics - like "I will never leave You" and "I will always", etc. Worked so well for the disciples at the Last Supper. Remember, the song's focus should always be all about us.

Oh, and simplify the drums.

And there you have it - CCM.

:P

I'm not crazy about CCM. I cant relate to a bunch of happy white people singing. I do like a few CCM songs, but I like them done in a soulful gospel style.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, this has got to be the funniest (and trueist) post I've seen in a while. Great job for nailing CCM to a T. :D :D

I would like to point out that bland vocals is not necessarily a component, cuz I lot of CCM music that I hear has some of the best harmony ever. ;)

I like harmony too, but what gets me about many CCM praise recordings is the bland 'vanilla' blended studio tone - makes me want to reach for the No-Doz...

If your church only does Hillsong music, either lead a revolution for more variety, learn CCM, or find a new church.

haha this made me laugh sorry bout that....maybe the revolution a thing and the like that i can do....but to find a new church...hmm only that i can't do...my father is the one leading our church even if i want to but i can't...

Incredibly, 'Meaningless' is the last song on the WOW Gospel 2009 DVD.

I listened to snippets of some other Anthony Evans songs - seems mostly CCM/Rock, but slightly more interesting than this one...

Try sneaking in some Israel Houghton - like 'Say So' and 'Again I Say Rejoice' (the latter is Scripture). Guitar-driven, rocky, but with a slight gospel edge.

Wait... I thought this was just a gospel thing? This is one of the things that turned me away from Gospel music so many years ago. Just repeating the same phrase over and over and over...

No - that's a Gospel Vamp... ;)

I can't count the times I've been annoyed at lyrics talking about how "I will" do this, and "I will" do that. But then again, David (the psalmist) used those phrases a lot, too.

Yes, I know one act *cough*MaryMary*cough* who seems guilty of that. Don't know if their songwriters borrowed that egocentric POV from Pop, CCM, or whatever.

Lately I notice that it seems lots of Gospel artists are doing some embarassing things because their labels are trying to get them to update their sound to 'reach the youth' or 'cross over'...like choir directors trying to rap, weird Photoshopped album covers and concept videos, middle-aged solos/duos/groups acting 'fly' and dressing skimpy, etc...

I guess my conclusion is, if it's not you and you can't do it well, don't even try...
