The Gift of Interpetation?
« on: July 14, 2009, 06:45:50 PM »
I was just wondering if people with the gift of tongues automaticlly know the language in which they speak.  Do they know if they're using good grammar?  Can other people who speak in tongues understand them?  Could they used it in every day convo if they wanted to?

If not, is there a gift of interpretation to balance out the gift of tongues?

OMG, I know you're dead serious, but that was so very funny. If I wasn't on my BB, I'd put about 10 smileys out to show you. LOL

Anyway, I'll get out of the way now so someone can answer your questions.

Ive met one person in my whole life that Ive seen interpreet tongues, and that was when I was a child.  I find this question intriguing as so many ppl speak talk of and exhort speaking in tongues, but hardly anyone ever speaks of the gift of interpretation.

Which brings another question: Can the person who spoke in tongues interpret their own tongues?

Well, when I'm speaking in Korean or Spanish, I know what I'm saying.

So....

Why would God give someone a gift to speak and not one to know what they're saying? That sounds counter productive to me....but then His ways are not....

Exactly.  And I don't get into the whole area of trying to figure God out... He's sovereign, so I don't worry about why He would do this or what He would or wouldn't do.  As you said, His ways and thoughts are not ours.  Our minds can't even begin to grasp many of the things that make up the totality of God.

But, I think the answer to your "why would God give someone a gift to speak..." question can be found in the Word.  I don't really feel like looking it up at the moment, but I think that whole discussion is found in I Cor 14, if I'm not mistaken.  But, you'd first have to differentiate between "other" tongues and "unknown" tongues.  Some people believe there's a difference; some disagree.

The Bible calls the gift of other tongues a sign for the unbeliever (He didn't say interpretation was for the unbeliever), so if a person is speaking in a language that they don't speak normally, it is a sign of God's ability.  They don't need to be able to understand what they're saying because it's not for them, it's a sign for the unbeliever.  Also, unknown tongues are also used to edify oneself.  Spiritually speaking, you don't need to know what you're saying for your spirit to be edified by it.

Romans 8:25-27 might help answer that, too.  Some take that to mean that the Holy Ghost prays on our behalf or ministers to our spirits when we speak in tongues.

Lastly, the Bible says (in that same chapter) that he who speaks in tongues should pray for the gift of interpretation.
