Professional Players and Economy.....VENT!!!
« on: July 14, 2009, 03:29:54 PM »
Ok I'm sorry but I must vent about this:

Today we are living in what I call "the cousin to the Great Depression." You got people who are losing jobs daily, working class people living paycheck to paycheck barely making it, families that are hungry because they can't afford to buy food, and senior citizens who have to choose between medicine and groceries.

But while we have those people we have others in professional sports complaining because they didn't get necessarily the salary that they wanted. One NBA player wants $10 million but the team is only offering $8 million. Right now if I could just take $8 million I would be happy! What will a two million dollar loss do to someone who's made a lot of money already in their career?

Sorry yall but that really frustrates me how some professional athletes will refuse to play because they didn't get the money they wanted (in the millions) and so many families and individuals are barely making it.....ugghh!!!

Look at it this way: it takes money to make money. Without money, the player can't spend it. If he doesn't spend it, someone loses their job. How many people can be supported with 2 million dollars?

133 people making 15K/year
66 people making 30k/year
40 people making 50k/year
26 people making 75k/year

...You get the gist. The money doesn't have to go directly to them. Those people that are working will get it through consumption. That's basic Reganomics! ;)

Really though, our economy works off of people spending money. If too many people saved or the money wasn't moving things would grind to a halt.

To put things into perspective: on your next interview, if the employer offers you 20% less than the market rate for your position, or 20% less than what you feel you should be compensated, what will you do?

Let's put it this way: you get accustomed to a way of living.  It's based on your arena and overall fairness.

In 2007, I survived off of $11,600 for the year.  Bills were paid on time, rent never late, and traveled.

In 2008, I tripled that salary, however I was disatisfied because the person I trained makes 20% more than I, however I'm supposedly an asset to the company.  In review, I make way more than what I made last year, however when it came to fairness, I was cheated.

Same method applies. :D

Look at it this way, we all have that same opportunity. They are Professionals, cause they worked hard & perfected there skill & found someone with way more money than they have, to pay for there talent. So our job is to perfect the talent that God has blessed us with & find someone, that has way more money than we have to pay for our talent.

I'm still trying to find out the down side to the bolded part.  I don't know the ins and outs of communism so there could be a huge downside to that.  :-\

Well, one down side is that the brilliant, creative, innovative,  ambitious hard-workers have to support the unmotivated, lazy, limited thinkers.

When I was thinking about situtaion I was thinking more along the lines about how the rich treat the poor.  This is a good point.  Like I mentioned before I don't really know anything about communisim so perhaps I'll study up on it now.

Side Note:
The point LaRue made reminds me of a similar argument that was made a while ago about colleges who grade on an "A, B,C,D,F" scale verse colleges/unis who grade on an "A, A+, B, B+, C, C+, D, D+, F" scale.  I believe the argument was that students and professors didn't think it was fair for the students who got high As in class to be put in the same group as the students who just made it an "A" by the skin of their teeth.

Church I feel ya.  Like one commentator said, people don't mind the salaries of the pros, but hate when they complain about it.

I disagree respectfully (here comes my social stratification class). Even though the opportunity to move forward is there everyone does not have equal access to the same opportunity. I would also argue that everyone who is professional did not work hard to get to that level. So is learning basketball plays more hard work or as much hard work as being an electrician or a farmer from Mexico making small wage?

I'm not hating on these people who make a lot of money. Praise God for them but to me it's not right for people in the high-salary level to complain cause they can't get EXACTLY what they want when people at lower levels are struggling just to make ends meet.

Its all relative. The people on the "lower level" as you put it, are wealthy in comparison to some families in Haiti, Africa, and shucks, right here in our country even.
Technically, no one should be complaining, because there's always someone worse off than we are.

If those ball players earned the right to an enormously high salary, then they should get what they deserve and negotiated. Likewise, there may be some folks out there who think you or I are grossly overpaid for the work we do. That's their worry, not mine. *shrug*

No, however; what the market will pay for an electrician is small. The pro athletes bring more value to the free marketplace than an electrician or farmer ever could. They fill stadiums with patrons of their team (millions of dollars). They sell athletic gear to patrons for various companies (millions of dollars). They sell tons of products to eat and drink to people all over the world (millions of dollars). So, rightly so, they get a portion of the pie from teams in anticipation of such sales on the backend.

They swim in bigger pools. I swim in a $300k pool. Pool meaning the field to make such an income. They swim in a $500m pool.

I'll put a big COSIGN...

...on that one!

I personally know people that grew up without running water, and not just intermittently absent. They didn't have running water period. No electricity. They had to kill their food and cook it then. Even better, they don't have public assistance, so if their families don't support them, no one will. These people are trying their best to become American citizens, because of the opportunities we have.
