Minister of Music-never done it before-NEED HELP
« on: March 31, 2009, 12:45:45 PM »
I have never directed a choir before, and the church that I am auditioning at this Sunday is asking me if I'd be willing to do so. I haven't given them an answer yet. I can pick out parts, but I'm afraid this may be more than I am willing to do, or even have time for.
any advice would help.
thanks

it depends, what kind of church is it?

All choirs are different so it really depends on the church.

Meh really the only advice i can give as i'm not a MOM is go with it. Ask God about it. If you get there and it feels right the do it. Being led by the Holy Spirit is the best way to walk. So you do what you think God wants you to do.

Oh and Best of luck with your audition.

Contact a few ministers of music at churches/choirs you admire and ask to sit in on their rehearsals to see how they rehearse.  Be humble and explain to them your desire to learn more about music ministry towards the goal of edifying God and more times then not, theyll let you sit in and observe.  Make sure you sit in a place where you wont be a distraction and listen/watch.  Make sure you thank the Mom and take them out to lunch every now and then to pick their brain.

Also, if there are community/mass choir/associations in your area, join them  so you can get some ideas on how to lead.  The more choirs you see rehearse, the more viewpoints you can get on how to lead (and not lead lol) rehearsals.

I say, be calm and focus. It will probably come to you naturally sooner or later. Just learn to be patient and make sure the choir is focusing on you. Have them learn your hand signals and such.

Most importantly, don't worry. If you play an instrument, then it may be a little hard but if you don't, make sure the musicians are on point with your hand signals and with their music as well.
