The Music You Listen To...
« on: April 28, 2009, 05:28:56 PM »
Here's something I've been thinking about:

Do you think that the music you listen to affects your 'style' of playing? In what way?

And if you believe it does, are you more conscious of the type of music you listen to?

I think it depends on the person and their skill level. You can listen to whatever kinda of music you want, but if you dont have the ear or natural skill, or the theory behind it, you aint gonna be able to play it. But overall, I say that it does.

Oh most definitely.  Most people play what they hear.  So, if all u hear is rock music, u gonna have a rock style.  If all you hear is gospel, u gonna have a gospel style, etc.

I've noticed that the more classical music I listen to for school, the more my gospel start to sound like classical.  Then, when I switch up to gospel, I get to school and my classical stuff sounds gospel.  Then, when I listen to CCM for school ministry, my gospel takes on that CCM style.  So, yeah man the music u listen to definitely can affect your style.

I am conscious of the music that I listen to.  That's why I have to keep switching up so that when I'm in a different setting, I'm playing the style that fits.

My overall goal is to have a blended style of all the music genres I like.  Then, I can control how much of each style I wanna exhibit in my music at any given time.
Real musicians play in every key!!!
