need help on drum heads
« on: February 28, 2009, 10:57:19 AM »
Im a bass player looking into drumming now.  Been playing drums for a while, not advanced but I decided to buy me a set.  I need to find any websites that can help me educate on the different heads.

The sound im looking for is phat, similar to the drummer steve jordan.

Any advice will help.

Thanks

Remo - http://www.remo.com

Evans - http://www.evansdrumheads.com

Aquarian - http://www.aquariandrumheads.com

Much like bass strings, it's all in the composition of the product and the tuning.  If you want a 'phat' (fat) sound, I'd suggest that you start with a coated single ply head, with a medium tension on the batter and resonant heads.

Batter, as its name implies is the side in which you strike.  The resonant side is the conduit in which is works in conjunction with the batter head.  For example the resonant works once the batter head is struck, the air moves the head, causing the resonant head to flex/vibrate, therefore creating a full(er) tone than a single headed drum (which of course would not have a resonant head, and would not be as full - some would even say dead sounding).

Sure.  80% of your cohorts knows what they're talking about, while 20% does, hence 80/20.
