I tried but the acoustics or lack there of makes the ugly overtones more noticeable.

...ah yes.  I knew it!  You have that tom tuned too high.

...look man, although the 10 sounds good high the tom right next to it is a 9"x12".  It sounds like you're trying to get your toms to sound like a 7"x8" and 8"x10" across the top.  You're going to have to tune that 12" how the guys are telling you to tune it. 8)

i had a similar problem with my 12" mapex pro-m tom. like sabe said the 12" tom has to sound like a 12". once i figured out how to tune the drum, now it sounds great. in addition, i also got my tom cut 2 inches from a 10x12 to 8x12 as well as having my bearing edges recut to a double 45 cut, all thanks to precision drum company which helped as well....

you may want to check your hardware. sometimes  tom mount issues can give you two totally different tones when a tom is mounted or not mounted.

Aight all, I dumped the Remo's and I tuned around the 12" then played them and for kicks threw on some moongels and I got to admit. I liked it better with no dampening. I got to get used to the ring a little but it projects better without the dampening. Thanks

Good! You'll get use to the overtones. Now when you mic your set, it's gonna sound even better.

I just finished tuning my 12,13 and 16 yesterday.G2 coated over G1's basswood with no muffling and lemme tell you they sound great.I would say the only time you should need any kind of muffling is if the room you are playing in has bad acoustics and the drums will over power it.I know now with the right heads and tuning, just about any drum can sound good or great.
