Kick Drum Question

Aight I haven't seen a post on this for reference so I thought I throw something out for the "ignant" (me). What do you guys use in your kick to get a deep sound? I've used everything in my 18"x22", pillows, emad, emad reso, emad pillow, emad, emad, emad. I tighten, I loosen, I squeeze, I cry, when no one's looking I kick it eddie and giggle to myself (Delirious, watch it you'll know what I'm talking about).  Just thought I'd get some insight into it and if you got time give insight into batter heads for toms, evans coated vs remo suede.

At this moment, I use Luen 2ply clear on the batter side with a Remo muffler ringer. The reso side, I use Luen black 2 ply and I modified it by putting little strips of foam on the inside of the head.
I just discovered a new product called The Kickport designed by a new company out of Petaluma, CA (near San Fran.) and it is AMAZING. The best new product at NAMM, IMO, and alot of others opinion. It makes your bass drum project so much better and at a lower frequency. Much like a 808 or a 909, depending on how you tune your bass drum. It sounds as if the drum is already mic. My combo is SKII batter with 1ply reso. Nothing inside. Extremely loose tuning (As in finger tightening).

Seems to work for me. I tune the heads just past wrinkles & thats it.

Oh! Don't forget to stretch the heads properly & cleaning the bearing edges before putting them on.

This really is a tuning issue and has been discussed here numerous times.

In general you first need to know what wood your kick is made of to get a rough determinatin of how low it will actually resonate. Use a head with an internal ring for the batter head... i suggest the Evans EQ1 for the most low end rumble... but you can get good low end with a ported head as well. A 2-ply batter with an internal (EVANS EQ1,EQ3 or Hydraulic )or external ring (such as the EMAD/GMAD)
I generally go 2-3 half turns past finger tight on the batter and maybe 4 half turns on the front.
I prefer nothing inside for muffling... and I get shake the window lows.
if you put something inside roll 2 towels and place one against each head a la Dave Weckl. Steve Gadd puts a blanket and a weight (barbell plate) in the bottom of his kick even his 20" and gets a huge thump.

You probably won't find the Kickport online yet because it's such a new product. I'll do my best to post a pic and some info soon as I can.

Note:

Putting things inside the kick does not increase the depth/low end but actually focuses the tone that is already there by cutting some of the airiness/sustain. when it comes to low end ... you can get so low that the tones are not audible with assistance of a good mic such as a sub-kick  / a reversed wired speaker or other woofer type setup.

Putting things inside the kick does not increase the depth/low end but actually focuses the tone that is already there by cutting some of the airiness/sustain. when it comes to low end ... you can get so low that the tones are not audible with assistance of a good mic such as a sub-kick  / a reversed wired speaker or other woofer type setup.

If you are referring to pillows and muffling devices, I agree. To much muffling and pillow stuffing will deaden/choke the sound, which can be benefical if that's what you are looking for in your bass drum sound. The product I'm recommending is very helpful in bring out the fullness of the bass drum and help carry the low end a greater distance. It's not like the frequency is low that only a whale can hear it. The low end is enhanced. I'm here to tell you, I witnessed it for myself and it works without pillows and deadeners. It's the real deal. Especially if you don't have a mic for your bass drum.

If you are referring to pillows and muffling devices, I agree. Those deaden the sound, which can be benefical if that's what you are looking for in your sound. A lot of people don't realize that when they have tuned as low as they can without it getting slappy that they really are not hearing all the lows. They need a mic to pick up the sub lows. It is the stuff the home stereo doesn't pick up but the boosted car system does... you know.

Yeah man, when I get more info I will most def get it to you. SK, man I was floored when I heard it. You will love bro, you got to get one. All you need is one because interchangeable, and they demo it on a Pearl Session bass and that drum just message the ears and torso. The Pearl rep came by and was like trippin'... I won't be suprised if Pearl desides to add it to there drums as a offical add-on assessory...

And again find bob gatzen on youtube. He has some really useful videos and is your kick mic'd?  I personally like 1 ply clear heads tuned as low as possible-lots of tone, but low attack but it doesnt supposed to be mic'd inside the drum.
