Whoa! VIBE blasts Tye's album!
« on: December 01, 2008, 12:29:56 PM »
Wow! I had to read this twice to make sure I was reading it right.......My favorite part is when they start comparing him to Kirk Franklin. I guess they haven't realized yet that Gospel Music is not a competition. Plus I don't understand how the world could critique a gospel album anyway, but they did and here is what they had to say about "Stand Out"..............

They should have found someone who listens to Gospel music to review the album.

And why would she use the phrase “dances orgasmically” to describe a Gospel artist? That was just done in poor taste.

But I’m glad the readers have voiced their opinion below the article. Some of them had some good points.

I've heard of not liking someones album, but dang. I just can't believe some of the words that were used in the article and that Kirk Franklin is being used as a measuring stick.....Oh Well. I think the problem is Tye didn't use enough Auto-tune on the vocals.  ;D Maybe they though Mary Mary's latest album was up to par with Kirk. ::) Auto-tune is the new cowbell. ;D

And, why is anyone giving credence (or, the time of day) to ANYTHING Vibe has to say?  ::) :-\

The reviewer just simply scanned through the beats instead of trying to listen to the message therein.  They pretty much showed their musical maturity with this review.  It's pretty obvious there was already a personal bias there from the mere physical desciption of Mr. Tribbett.  There was no reason to refer to him as "beanpole-looking."  That has nothing to do with the music and his intention with the project.  This has already been discussed on here as this review was first done in June.

You know that Ms. Linda Hobbs(the author if this reveiew) had an inbox full of responses.  She probably had to shut it down.

Actual comment I left on the page.

Give us something with actual content.

For the record - Yes, I love this album.

It is just personal thought, but its personal thought that just maybe people read and did not go out and buy the album and find out for themselves. Thats what I hate about reviews, is that music is really just about your personal preference. But a widely spread magazine like Vibe, that review could have hindered those people who have never heard of Tye from trying out his music.

I dont think that argument is really valid. Because people's musical tase are so diverse, we should take album reviews with a grain of salt. All you have to do is go on Itune or Amazon and check out the music for yourself. I used to read that magazine a few years ago, and most of the time I disagreed with the album reviewers

There are MANY reviews that are actual well thought out reviews (regardless of whether they were scathing or not) & reviewers can do them without fully submitting themselves to their own personal thoughts & reviews.

When "proper" bad reviews are given there is supportive evidence given by the reviewer stating their case. That didn't happen here.

If you don't buy an album because "so and so" gave it a 3/10 and thinks it should be thrown to the deepest parts of the sea... and you DIDN'T even try to listen to it... Don't blame the reviewer.

I can't say I'm the best when it comes to writing CD reiviews...that why this one made me feel good inside.  Lol!!!

This was not a good review.  It's not because it was negative, but because it was just a bad review period.

LGM members gave worse reviews months ago.

Fact is there is nothing wrong with Kirk Franklin being used as the measuring stick because in today's break out Gospel music he started it all and set the standard.

Though I like the project overall with the more CCM style and think that it will open the ears of a broader audience of races/nationalities there are some valid points in the review. There are some points in the songs that you cannot understand what is being said. There are some points where the organ and horns are just blaring and ripping. There are some songs that don't take you in though I felt they could/should have. My took it to work and played it and her co-workers even heard some disturbing parts that broke the flow of them being able to get in there.

Another term outside of "orgasmic" could/should have been used but everyone does not like Tye's presentation of dance. He has even talked about times of having been kicked off of pulpits by pastors.

Now the truly disturbing commentary should be the opening sentence about gospel artist getting to "practice there chops every Sunday." When the world takes note of church musicians chops fest prior to talking about anything else WE HAVE MISSED THE MARK and out shined our gift. When the audience/demographic that the music is addressed to says the mark was missed you have to take note and inquire why was it missed? Vibe represents that audience/demographic.

Dissect and understand the message before getting emotionally caught up in the messenger else you miss whatever truth that may exist or lesson therein.
