CS: Feeling a bit fuzzy because some of my extended family actually dropped by to sing me happy birthday instead of just calling. I just gave away one of my old treasured skateboard decks to a younger cousin. Good times.

Well Happy Birthday Amigo.  May the Lord bless you with many more to come.

I'm not much of a singer, and don't know where you live, so I'll just say it here: Happy Birth Anniversary!!!

Sorry I missed the party. But happy belated birthday.  :D

Feeling a bit frustrated. Learning piano is like growing up, the more you learn, the more you realize that you DON'T know much.   :(

Thank you blyempowered. You're right. When I look back, I know how it made me feel every time I crossed a hurdle and I felt like I did something so great. lol It just feels like it's been too long since I've been able to cross another hurdle.

Thank you phbrown. You're right too. I'm proud of myself for learning what I have and I feel like I have come a long way. I know every scale, I know the major triads, minor triads, I understand 7ths (just trying to get them ingrained in my brain), I understand the number system, I hace accumulated a lot of traditional hymns that use the number chords so I can play them in any key. The problem is, I don't know how to transition from just hitting the chords on the beat, to making it sound like I'm playing the piano. I've been searching for the answer, everything I try just sounds like a childrens song or like Pat Boone, or worse. I know I'll get there one day, just gotta find the road that gets there first.  ;)

The "road" that got me there was mostly due to studying classical music. I mean literally, getting the sheet music and studying what the composers were doing. A lot of the fill-ins that piano players are nothing more than scales (or parts of scales), chord arpeggios, and imitations of singers.

It's hard to really teach fill-ins in a systematic way because they are mostly learned through observation and imitation. Even tutorials won't show you every little note that is being played because by the time it's been played, most of em have forgotten it and moved to the next idea.
Real musicians play in every key!!!

try arpeggiating your chords, and changing the chord inversion.

When I play by myself I mix in the Pat Boone style with gospel for testimony service.  :)

Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement. I'm back to digging in again to move up to that level.

You are so right T-Block. I don't really have anyone to observe, but I'm finding a lot of stuff on Youtube and instead of just watching tutorials for fill ins, I'm trying to watch just to watch, not for getting chords but watching for style. My "adopted" daughter was over yesterday. She plays by ear beautifully! She has no clue what she is doing. She doesn't know the difference between an Em and a Emaj. I was able to teach her some theory and give her charts, but when she played and I asked her to do a run over again, she couldn't because she just didn't know what she did. I know it can't be taught, but it's tough when you're just on your own. That's why I joined this awesome place.  ;D

Thank you wolfman. My arpeggios don't sound right. I'll just keep working on that.  ;)

Hmmm.... very interesting. Maybe I'll try "gospelizing" my Pat Boone style and get a good mix.  :D
