lets see ... ideas i have so far but i don't really like
video over ip phones . such as the Cisco video phone could use the gigabit network

you could provide highly localized weather forecast.
By combining millions of data points surronding a location and utilitzing Google's Think Insight it is now possible to forecast when it will rain at your house and not just the city.
Smart roads
The network provides the infrastructure needed to deploy smart roads which leads to fully automated cars.
movie streaming
well 3d movie streaming
Cloud services
Combine a low cost laptop like the XO

with a lightweight operating system like Jolicloud and do all the hard data crunching stuff in google servers.
Strain modeling of bridges
By attaching data loggers to bridges, alarms can be created for when the bridge needs repair by monitoring how the bridge behaves when loaded and unloaded.
Distributed Air sampling
Could provide data in the case of a bioterriost attack. These remote stations could also sample ragweed, mold, smog and other pollutants.
Giant billboard TV'S
Now the news can be on billboards as you drive to work.
Wide area network
like a big wifi hotspot for the entire city
Control a robot in your house
Wouldn't it be nice to have Asimo do some chores around your house? Or better yet how about a virtual butler? You hire someone in India to control a robot who does your dishes, fold towels and everything else. The person in India wears a body suit that controls the robot. No need to worry about the robot trying to learn how to walk. The human in India will have haptic feedback to feel what the robot feels and walk accordingly.
grr ... I don't like any of these ideas
