Quartet!!!
« on: February 19, 2012, 05:43:02 PM »
Hey LGM! It's been a while since I posted but best believe I still been in the trenches everyday learning the piano. I play in a gospel quartet group mostly 1-4-5 progressions, and I want to know what to play so that my keys can hold the rhythm to allow my guitar player to do his thing and also to stay out of the way of my bass player. It's hard for me to explain but I hear what I want in the song "he laid his hands on me" by lee Williams. I've watched all kinds of tutorials like Sams gospel bounce and spent countless hours tryna figure out what is going on but I'm having trouble. Lots of YouTube videos seem to come close but go right around the sound I'm looking to learn. I just want a basic groove I can play over any uptempo 1-4-5 song
HELP ME LGM!!!!

He Laid His Hands On Me

The piano player is working around the bass notes and the quartet notes. In the key of D minor(F major6) you have of pallet of chords that fit this song.
D minor
C major
E minor
F minor6
G major7
A major7

All your chords follow this scale D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D.  If you  haven't learned how to chord scales this I will give you the pattern I also teach on my site.
D= F A D
E= G B E
F= A D F
G= C E G
A= D F A
B= D G B
C= E G C
D= F A D

Now these chords are used adding all the elements of chord e.g.  6th, 7th, dimished etc.  You bounce off these chords using F# B, E Bb, F B.
I love music, any kind of music.

Thanx Sam! Do u think its possible u could do a short video so that I could hear this concept and see it in action without all the other instruments confusing my ears?
I could also post a video of what I would normally play on a song like this. I can tell u if it 145 I would usually play 7th chords bounce back and forth between the one and four and  my left will just stays on the root or does a walk up to the 4

I don't teach the 1-4-5 chord progressions. This song requires you to know what chords are available to play around the singing and bass player. If you practice the chords I gave you above you will "hear" them used in the video.
