I use Cakewalk Sonar Producer and then import into ProTools M-Powered. I depends on what level of production he want to go into. Cakewalk has a better midi editor where I can fix bad notes and lock down the timing. Protools is more for live vocal/instrumental audio recording and pre-production before you master your project. Cakewalk for Home Studio is around 99.00, Protools can range from 249.00 and up and you need top flight computer (MacPro Quad) for the HD audio experience.http://www.sweetwater.com/c699--DAW_Software
I also use Sonar and Reason. Reason doesn't do vocals but can be used very well with Sonar, which does vocals.
