Can Someone Explain???............
« on: October 15, 2008, 04:14:29 PM »
What's up LGM Fam! I'm not real big on theory, but I'm tryin to learn though... Last Sunday, another keyboardistwas trying to explain to me about bypassing a note and hitting a 11th and a 9th, etc... And I really couldn't grasp what he was saying. Could someone please explain this if you know what I'm talking about??? ?/?

Maybe I should rephrase... :)

He said something like hitting a major 9th chord or something and I looked at him like what??? ?/? Can someone explain what a 9th or an 11th is? I mean, I always thought there was like, 8 notes in a scale or something...

I don't think I fully understand your question but there can be more or less notes in a scale depending on what scale your playing...

For now we'll keep it simple though and say there are "only" 7 notes in a scale.

Ex: C major
1) C
2) D
3) E
4) F
5) G
6) A
7) B

After the 7th note in this particular scale, the notes just repeat.  Applying this concept, we can see that the "9th" is actually the same note as the 2nd (D), only 1 octave higher.  Same goes for an 11th (F)...it's the same as your 4th, again, just one octave higher.

Make sense now?

Be Blessed,
J

He was probably just trying to give advice on how to "phatten" up your chords.  Instead of playing basic 3-note or 7th chords, u can play 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths.

Like it was explained earlier, once u go past the scale degrees 1-7, they start over.  So, in C u have:

C=8
D=9
E=10
F=11
G=12
A=13

So, let's say u playing a regular C major chord, C-E-G.  U can add in the 9th to form a Cadd9 chord like this:

C-(D)-E-G
(D)-E-G-C
E-G-C-(D)
G-C-(D)-E

Or, if ur playing a dominant 7th chord, C-E-G-Bb, u can play a dominant 9th chord instead:

C-E-G-Bb-D

Both of your explainations make sense.

For now we'll keep it simple though and say there are "only" 7 notes in a scale

And saying that there are seven notes in a scale makes it a lot more clearer.

            Thank you both,
