Yamaha Motif X vs. Roland Fantom G
« on: July 24, 2008, 11:06:13 AM »
Ok guys so I need some help on this new decision I have been blessed to make. My church is getting a new board for me and they gave me the choice of the Roland Fantom G series or the Yamaha Motif X series. Now I have played on the Motif before just a little at the guitar center so I know how that plays somewhat but i have no idea about the Fantom. Now I have been trying to research my best and i would go out to the guitar center but its like i never have the time. SOoOo with that said I want some help on this decision. Any Suggestions or do any of yall have either boards.... con/pros?? lol anything would help  ;) ;) ;D

I never played on either board but you want something that anyone can play (especially visiting churches). You want it at least setup that as soon it is on it's on a piano sound and not have to go through leaps and bounds to find one. :D

You are sooooo right about that one. I remember the pastor had went to a different church to preach. I went up because the choir was about to sing and the keyboard player dipped out of church and was like its in your hands because he had somewhere else to be...I go to the motif and it was set on this crazy xylophone and so I cut it off and then on again...SAME SOUND !!! soo im looking at the other musicians and they all like  ?/? ?/? ?/? so finally i figured how to get it just on a piano but yeah it was a good thing they were taking up so much time talking before they sung...

i'm like who in their right mind wants to start their board up on the xylophone all the time. i mean he was so sick wit it and i was thinking maybe he does it to encourage others NOT to play on his keys unless he is there and gives approval.

Well my church has both and i prefer the Motif infinitely. I am not technical so i can't tell you technical differences between teh two, but i have played them and i prefer the motif. The sounds are (IMO) better on the Motif than the Fantom and the board's action feels so much better.

What won me over to the Motif was the sliders that you can use in performance mode. 4 voices that you can adjust their volume and such...fantastic.

We have the XS8 at church, yet I want that Fantom G8. If I had the Fantom G8, Id probably want the XS8. So I believe they both have great features and wont matter too much on which you pick, esp since the Fantom is getting way more recognition for the Roland. The Fantom offers way more power than you would ever need for church. The XS does for that matter, too. If your church is on a budget, they can get a S90Es8 or a MO8 if you still need a workstation and you'll get all you need soundwise.

well I dont know about the Motif XS, cuz I'm a HUGE fan of using a S90ES for main keys...

but when I played on the Fantom G at Guitar Center a few months ago, I was really under-impressed by the piano sound and the key action...but maybe thats just me! So if I had to choose between ONLY those 2 boards I would get the Motif XS... but if I had any choice, I'd go with the S90ES!

I've played both of these boards before and i like 'em. But really what one of the board lacks the other one picks up for. It's really hard for me to choose which one i want too b/c im about to buy one of them (the 6) im only 15.But definitely they're on the same level but i would recommend the Fantom b/c of the feel of the keys its like no other.IDK ask God.LOL!!

I've been playing an XS 6 for several weeks now.imo The sounds like piano, organ, horns  are much better than roland,I have a JV 1010 that think the sounds are as good as new fantom. It(roland ) may be easier to use for some genre',but thought the organ sounds sounded more like distorted guitars;pretty suprising since the VK8 organ is pretty good. The learning curve on yamaha is steep, but to access  sounds-category search is pretty simple.I think 3rd party support for Motif might be better.so good luck and pray!

Youngstarter,

Are you plan on getting a weighted boards or X6, X7, G6, or G7.

The reason why I asked you that is, I have a Fantom X8,  and if you play between the weighted Fantom and the weigthed Motif you will realize that the Motif have a small time dely from when the key raises up again after been played (there is a term for this but I forgot). That may seem like nothing, but try to do such things as COGIC runs with the Fantom and then with the Motif and you will see how much this one thing effects your playing.

LOL yeah i had to get used to that on the Motif. We have both the Fantom X8 and the Motif ES8 in church and there is a very noticeable delay between when you hit the key and when it comes up again on the Motif. The Fantom is slightly better in terms of action- the keys come up almost immediately. one of the guys in our choir who has not played a weighted keyboard before kept complaining about the Motif and how it kept getting "stuck".

In the end though you get used to it and i just prefer to play the Motif.

WOW I didn't even know that. Yeah I am a big person on the runs and everything so yeah I definitely need my board to be on point with it.
