Preacher chords in E nat and F nat
« on: July 09, 2008, 07:34:08 PM »
Hello all! This is my first post. :) My preacher likes to key up in E and that seems to be a difficult key for me to play preacher chords in. I don't play a lot on the organ yet, so I don't have much practice in, but when we go out of town and the main organist cannot go, I am the one that plays. Anywho, my pastor keys up in E, goes to F and then to F#. The main organist is a major transposer so when the pastor keys up in E the organist puts him in Eb and if when he goes up to F or F# the organist can play in those keys so he follows him. Most of the time the organist does not feel like following the preacher so he will keep playing in Eb no matter how many times the pastor may modulate.
Can I get some help!
P.S. Trina Trine - if you are reading this, I have enjoyed all of your videos on youtube.com! You are an inspiration. I have so many people that are inspirations like: Twinkie Clark, Kim Burrell, Cassondra O'Neal, John Peters, Melvin Crispell, David Wright, Sean (from Dallas) and the list could go on and on.
Okay, Be Blessed.

Hey sweetie and thank you so very much for your encouragement, love and support!  Well it looks like someone is perping with the transpose key and of course, I'M AGAINST TRANSPOSING!  I can't stand it because you're not really respecting your craft by cheating.  I applaud you for not wanting to transpose.  The only way to get good in those keys like E, F#, A and others is to of course practice.  That's the way I had to learn and I KNOW for a fact that IT WILL BE DONE!  Let me know if I or others can help.  That's what we're here for!  To advance for the Kingdom TOGETHER!  Love you! ;D

Here's a lil trick that most organists already know! However you still need to know a lil' bit about progressions and chord structures to do this.
Here is a quick crash course on "SEVENTH PLAYED WITH YOUR LEFT HAND WITH 6-2-5-1 PROGRESSIONS"

SEVEN CHORDS

First the E major scale: E,F#,G#,A,B,C#,D#,E
                         aka: 1,2,  3,  4,5, 6,   7, 8
(numbering the notes in the scale is important for learning progressions which we will do in this lesson)

Now there's an E major 7 and an E7.

An E major 7 looks like this

E-G#-B-D#

Now a an E7 chord looks like this

E-G#-B-D  (D is the seven) The 7 is flat

"WE ARE GOING TO USE THE E7 CHORD"

Now to use this in organ form for your left hand

here's the chord again:

E-G#-B-D
1-3-5-7

Take the 3 and the 7 and play them as a chord with your left hand and use the 1 on your foot pedal. So, you'll have something like this:

FOOT/LEFT HAND

E/G#-D

IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT!!!

{Note} *You will need to practice this in every key before you can continue on to the progressions part of this lesson*

NOW FOR PROGRESSIONS

We're gonna do 6-2-5-1 progression for this lesson

here's the E major scale once more:

(1)E  (2)F#  (3)G#  (4)A  (5)B  (6)C#  (7)D#  (8)E

Of course we are starting on the 6.  As you can see the 6 is C# , so it would look like this

FOOT/LEFT HAND

(6) C#/F-B

(2) F#/E-Bb

(5) B/Eb-A

(1) E/D-Ab

As you can see your left and is just moving down half-steps while your foot is moving through the progressions.
Learn to do this in every key. I've already given you the tools to do so. The best way to learn progressions in every key
is to learn your scales in every key. We'll incorporate the right hand in the next lesson, but right now you got some practicing to do!

LET ME KNOW IF THIS HELPS

BLESS GOD ;D

Hello this is my first time being at the organ room. I am mostly a keyboardist/piano player. This might be a bad question but i did not know organs got transpose button. How with me being in the organ room allows me to be a better player.

T-jazz! Thank you. I am ready for the right hand now.  I can't say thank you enough.
Last night actually I think the organist was a little intimidated by me playing in E. I was already on my board when the pastor keyed up so when the organist came up he had no choice but to play in E. He did okay. :D

Question T-Jazz, How do you know what chords to play with the left hand (like in this example)? I've always been puzzled about that.  I understand the progression numbers but never knew how to come up with the chords

Thanks ya'll...........

wassup CESharp?? Well there's alot of ways you can incorporate you left hand, but this is just one of them! Here is an example:

FIRST HERE'S A BASIC PROGRESSION IN Db (in keyboard forn) 7-3-6-2-5-1

LEFT HAND/RIGHT HAND

C/Bb-Eb-Gb

F/A-C-Eb

Bb/Ab-Db-F

Eb/G-Bb-Db-F

Ab/Gb-Ab-C-Eb

Db/F-Ab-Db

NOW HERE'S THE SAME PROGRESSION IN ORGAN FORM USING SEVENS IN YOUR LEFT HAND

FOOT/LEFT HAND/RIGHT HAND

C/Bb-E/Bb-Eb-Gb

F/A-Eb/A-C-Eb

Bb/Ab-D/Ab-Db-F

Eb/G-Db/G-Bb-Db-F

Ab/Gb-C/Ab-Bb-C-Eb

Db/F-B/F-Ab-Db   OR  Db/Ab-Db-Eb-F/Ab-Db

HOPE THIS HELPS

T-jazz! Thank you. I am ready for the right hand now.  I can't say thank you enough.

I'm glad to hear that both of you are benefiting from these lessons! Well, here we go with the second part of this lesson!

Another TIP with using seven chords the way we're using them is they are also a form of diminished chords!

A diminished chord is formed by flatting the 3 and the 5 in a major chord: like this...

E Major chord:  E-Ab-B

E Diminished chord: E-G-Bb

Now here's the E Diminished Scale:

(1)E  (2)F#  (3)G  (4)A  (5)Bb  (6)C  (7)C#  (8)D#

Now for our right hand we're gonna play Dim7 chords. So, it looks like this

E-G-Bb-C#
1-3-5-7

But we're gonna play the third inversion which is also called Bbdim7...Which looks like this

Bb-C#-E-G
5-7-1-3

TIP  One thing you should know about Diminished chords is that they are perfect chords. Meaning, there are only three versions of it! So, if you were to walk down half-steps with the dim chord you'll see at the third step you back at the same chord that you started on, just inverted! And that's what we are gonna do for the right hand in this lesson!

It looks like this using the 6-2-5-1 progression again:

FOOT/LEFT HAND/RIGHT HAND

(6) C#/F-B/B-D-F-Ab

(2) F#/E-Bb/Bb-Db-E-G

(5) B/Eb-A/A-C-Eb-Gb

(1) E/D-Ab/Ab-B-D-E

Again, learn this in every key! Like I said before, the best way to learn progressions in every key is to learn your scales in every key!  These are just basic progressions for backing up a preacher! They're are also the building blocks. So, practice these and when you've mastered these we'll move on to some more advanced chords and progressions!
