Hey I'm still new to the keyboard and I'm trying to purchase some DVD's to help me play better, my keyboard and organ player left my church for other churches and I played bass so its just me and the drummer so I'm getting on the keybaords now.  The thing is my church sings the old traditional congregational songs and hyms that we all know.

My question is which of the DVD's do you guys recommend, the Gospel Keys 101, 202, 300, 500 or do you guys recommend me getting the new Jamal Hartwell DVD called "Urban and Contemporary Play By Ear" DVD for beginners?

Welcome to the LGM family "Will.I.am", God bless you.
In my opinion, the GK 101, 202, and the 300pg course is a can't miss for a new musician. I have them...I also have the Urban Extreme by Jamal Hartwell. From what I heard, Jamal's latest DVD is more for the beginner so it may be worth trying.

All the GK series are very good, especially if you sit down with them and study them carefully.

Welcome to LGM!!  Sorry that I can't answer your question, though.

Try gospelkeyboard.com.  It's not as bumpin' as LGM but Jamal is one of the main dudes over there so maybe they can help you a bit better.

and the bass keeps runnin', runnin', and runnin' runnin'  :D

We never even asked what kind of music you want to play.

I thought Jamal indeed IS "The Main" dude at Gospelkeyboard. Meaning, he owns the site. But if i'm wrong, i can accept it. Because, i think i was wrong one other time - i think it was aroundddddd, ohhh i'd say....about 1996 or '97 roughly speaking. 8)
And if that bass keep runnin' like that, just give it a little 7up and crackers, and some rest, and it should be ok.

I will reccomend the new DVD from jamal it is great for beginners who is starting off. The question is what all do you know on the keyboard. a good starting place is here below
http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,55240.0.html
as well herehttp://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,55770.msg552514.html#new
the reason for the second link is because a musician told me in order to become a better musician is you got to learn songs as well as pattern because pattern repeats alot in music. If you can recognize the pattern in the songs as well as in every key for the song then you can become a great musician. Just remember the scripture states study to show yourself approval. If you want to grow to perfect your craft, you must study.

one more thing http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,54168.msg534814.html#msg534814

hope this helps

The best thing to do is look at the examples on the webpages: http://learngospelbyear.com/

I do know personally that the Learn by Ear DVD by me was designed for a brand new beginner....Someone who only knows notes. If you know your notes, then after this DVD you'll be able to play 90% of every worship and praise song out. Actually almost any song on the radio as well.

I watched your examples. They seem great. I love the LMS feature. I was just looking at the time. Gospelkeys202 is like 4 hours and Learn by Ear is 2, if i remember correctly. I like the Learn by Ear up to date technology tho. I dont know I'm still juggling. I know its hard to say too because each person learns differently.  ?/?

It's actually 3-hours (http://learngospelbyear.com/ScreenShots/byearcover.jpg) with an extra hour of audio lessons on the CD-ROM. Both products are completely different in the style, but both teach you the number system, which is the first thing you should learn as a beginner.

Jamal:

1) WHY, OH WHY DID YOU NOT MAKE THIS DVD FIRST!!!!!!!!!!

I love it, i love the simple words of advice like how to listen to a song properly and using the instrument voice they are using on the song and stuff like that. I am getting this man.

Oh why, oh why...I knowwww! To be honest, 4-5 years ago, I didn't have the knowledge and the command of the material like I do now. I have to admit, it's my best DVD to date as far as instruction.

Thanks jjbing3 for the purchase. Just a heads-up, I have another DVD coming out very soon about Church Service Chords. The Play by Ear is for more praise and worship, but the new DVD is for good old fashion church service.
