VIBRATO!!!!!
« on: June 27, 2008, 09:11:13 AM »
HI LGM

Its been a long time since I visited . I hope you are all well. I love that you we are alway there for each other in our times of need and if itgwasnt for LGM we would be lost here in the UK. This misitry is such a bIessing to us BRits.

Now i have  have a real fundemental question and i really hope someone can help. We have been consentrating on our fellowship and relationship with God now its time to iron out some basic problems I so hope someone can help.

Just a bit of history. I set up our community choir 4 years ago and have 22 singers on average. We have been blessed to be Glorifying our Lord and all members are on fire for Him.  BUT

How can I teach them to vibrato like and American Gospel choir. Is it that you can do this naturally in your choirs or do you just pick it up when you join from others if so How so may questions!!!.That sound and power that comes from all  singing in  vibrato is what I would like our choir to achieve. It amazes me!!!! We have quite a few singers who can pitch but just cant vibrato. I really dont know how to teach. I this have tried getting them to copy me  (My vibrato is quite fast due to years of having to blast it out) but there must be a key to passing this knowledge on. HELP

When our members join they have never sung Gospel before there are no workshops ect we dont have Contemperary Gospel choirs here to learn  from at all!! but we want to give God Praise like you do in the USA with Power!!!! If anyone can send  me exersices audio clips or send me info on resources where i can get help on this it would be fantastic. I hope you all understand how difficult it is for us here we are very much on our own.

Here is a clip of us singing at easter just as an example. Really looking forward to hearing form you

God Bless XXXXX

I've been teaching for some time, I also sing myself and may have a way to help you.  Vibrato is very easy to teach but it's a feeling.
Here's an exercise to try:

Have the choir sing a note and have them say yeah, very fast, repeatatively.  Since vibrato is a feeling this should help.  The reason people can't understand vibrato is becuase they don't know how it feels and this will give them an example of what it feels like.  Also do exercises that help them learn it, giving them CD's of songs with vibrato to study wouldn't be a bad idea either.   Hope this helps!!   ;)

Its all in the glottis! The back of your THOTE! (Throat) but the yeah thing should work... I tried it...

But buy some Ricky Dillard... buy some James Hall.. Buy some Old Ricky Dillard... listen to Judy McCallister she has heavy vibrato.  Its all in the attack... some choirs have vibrato but no attack... kinda "barking" or belting out notes as opposed to just giving a note and turning vibrato on...

So it all depends on what you want

And also inHope, once they start to do the exercises and get vibrato, each one will on there own have to practice slowing it down. When i first started singing, mine was real fast, i taped myself to hear how i sounded, thats when i started making adjustments. Now i can speed it up, or slow it down , depending on the feeling of the song. Tape some of your rehersals, when you listen back, you'll see what i mean.

But by the way, your group sounds very good, so keep bringing the fire, and He will bless you..
