?/?

I also thought I was following, but I lost it in the middle.
 :-\
Could you please explain again what you are saying Berbie..
For instance, that going up the circle of 4ths from B to C, what does it mean?

Are you saying that you don't like to notate in Enharmonics that have more than 2 sharps (A,E,B,F#,C#,G#,D# & A#) but prefer using (Bbb, Fb, Cb,Gb,Db,Ab,Eb &Bb).

Or are you saying you can only play in the keys of C,F,Bb,G,D? ?/?

I thought about it real hard and came to the conclusion that it is a total bummer to play anything in a key that has more than two sharps in it.  Flats are o k. I don't acknowledge the fact of a C# even being on the keyboard.  B_E_A_D_G_C  I live by.(the flat key signatures)  When playing by ear, those other notes aren't sharps,  they are flats.  Maybe that's why I can't play the keyboard.

berbie.

I know it's confusing dealing with all the sharps, but with a little practice it becomes just as easy as playing with the flats.  When playing by ear, the notes are whatever u want them to be.  Just be sure that u know all your notes and this won't be much of a problem.  Trying reading a piece of music in a flat key that has sharps and double sharp accidentals throughout the piece.  You will think twice about dealing with all flats.

I keep trying to tell people notes are different on sheet music than when playing by ear.

Reading music in sharps, just like mus said.  It's easier to read flats than sharps for some reason.

Reading music in the key of C is already such a challenge for me (for now), so I didn't even bother to buy the music book to Israel & New Breed's song book which has songs ranging notated in Gb & others in E!
But I might be very tempted to purchase it for the sake of completing my musicianship..ito reading.

When playing written music, the key signatures for F is Bb, for Bb, it is  Bb-Eb, for Eb it is Bb-Eb-Ab, for Ab it is Bb-Eb-Ab-Db, and so on in the order of BEADGC.  If you have that order in your head, and you know that any change due to key signature is going to be flat, it makes the reading much easier.  Sharps are not even in the room.  If I am playing in Ab, without even thinking at all, I know that BEAandD are changed and all changes are flat.  I like to play in the key of G, so I don't mind dealng with the one sharp.  I will in a push, read in the key of D, which has two sharps.  C is almost a no-brainer. They say that there's a key of C#.  I am a Db person.  I don't have much trouble playing in other keys by ear, but A, E and B I really don't care that much for. Is that messed up or what?
Berbie is a nick name from many years ago.  I am a man.  I started to learn to play the keyboard after retiring about ten years ago, and am self taught.  I say it strongly and often; one should get a teacher, even at 60.  I am sure I would be doing better if I had done so.

T-Block, I learned a lot from your posts, and of course, from others as well.

(even though one might not think so from my post)

Well that cleared up a lot. I also agree with your point of getting a teacher. I have no doubt that i would have progressed in my playing so much faster if i had stuck with my teacher. I just got bored cuz i was such a long way from playing what i wanted to play.

I am looking for a new teacher though.

That's right there.

I fought boredom really fiercely & I never let it build shelter in me.

So, tell me berbie, of all the sheet music you have played, what are all the key signatures u have come across?  I've come across every key signature that there is.

Hey, T, I come across a number of songs in the other keys. I do one of two things:, I ignore them, or if necessary, I find out how they go, and then play them by ear.  I have learned many, many chords.  I play scales to some extent, certainly enough to be familiar with them.  I have done a little Hannon, but stopped about two years ago. I have gone to the GMWA on several occasions and gained information there.  I have bought several conventional piano books, and many tapes and CDs.  Some I studied hard, others I handled in a cursury manner.  I learned a lot at Learn Gospel Music.  After all that, I am still just a little above a beginner.  I do play for two small churches and for a male group.  I only started to play the keyboard as a hobby, never dreaming that I would be playing for a church. I can't sing a lick, but I will get up and lead a song with the male chorus in a hot minute.
I'm having a blast. When I get on the keyboard, I am going to be flatting notes.  I ain't sharping nonna them suckers.  I actually tried using the transpose button, but I couldn't because the notes didn't sound like I expected them to, and it always got me lost. In a more serious vein, though, since I did go as far as I did, I find myself wistfully thinking how nice it would be to play at a semi pro level, and knowing that at 70, I am not going there.  Learning how to play the keyboard is easy.  Learning how to play it good is hard.  The things I do are often done in an effort to make learning easier and faster.
