A nice 2-5 progression

Here is a nice 2-5 progression that is used in a LOT of gospel songs. I am sure you have heard it, it is so common and very cool.

Key: Db- )the heavenly key)

LH/ RH- play without the sustain pedal, it is really better.

Note Names
Chord 1 Notes: Eb / A-Db-Eb-Gb- this is the 2 chord but instead of the regular minor, it is a min 7 flat 5 chord.

Chord 2: F / Ab-Db-F- this is your one chord on the RH but it is in the 3rd inversion with the 5th as the lowest note.
 
Chord 3: Gb / A-Db-Eb-Gb- This is your 4 bass on the LH and the RH goes back to the 2 minor 7 flat 5 chord.

Chord 4: Ab-C-Eb-Ab / Bb-Db-F- This whole chord is your 5 chord, or rather it is a V13 chord. I love ending on these chords.

Chord 5 (optional): Db-F-Db / G-Bb-Eb. I dunno what this chord is but i love it as an ending chord.

If you want to transform this into a number system, lemme know. I can definitely do it.

OK the progression is VERY simple. Its basically going from the 2 to the 1 to the 2 and then to the 5.

So here it is;

My assumption is that whoever is reading this is familiar with harmonizing the major scale and knows how chords are built. Having said all that, i am not going to go into an explanation of how to build chords but assume it is already know. If you dont understand, look it up.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE NUMBERS REFER TO THE POSITION OF THE NOTE WITHIN THE CHORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LH / RH

Explanation of the progression;

Chord 1:  The II chord is the first chord in the progression. The formula is as follows:  I / bV-VII-I-bIII. The bV is the flattened 5th. It si also a dim 7 chord.

Chord 2: This is the second chord in the progression. The formula is as follows; III / V-I-III. This is your simple I chord. 

Chord 3: 3rd chord in the prog. This is going BACK to your II chord posted above. The formula is the same for the RH, but the bass not is the bIII.

Chord 4: This is your V chord. The fingering i use makes it a V13 chord. It is; I-III-I / the LH is the VI chord of the major scale you are in.

Here goes, before you play that 5 (u call it a V13 chord, but it isn't cuz it's missing the b7, LOL), can you play a different kind of 5 or a different chord altogether to lead into that chord?  It sounds kind of wierd that you got those first 3 cool chords, then BAM u hit with a dominant chord type chord.  Not a very smooth transition and not really very musical that way IMO.

Thanks for catching that V13 chord. I totally forgot to add the b7.

Anyway as to another chord leading to the V, i guess a bVdim 7 would be fine. Its basic but i cannot think of any other chord right now. When i get home i'll look it over again.

what about:  G / Bb-Db-F  *#IVm7 (b5)

or:  Eb / G-Bb-Db-F  *II9

or:  Eb-Db / G-C-Db-F  *II9 (13)

or:  G / Bb-Eb-G  *II 6

or:  Ab / Ab-Db-F  *I 6/4

I'm not understanding chord 4 and 5...key of Db...the walk up from 2 to 5 is common, but I'm not getting the ending...

maybe you meant...?

Maybe this as different ending chords in Db 7Notemode used this in the "Misty Part1" lesson in the jazz forum in Eb, the only difference is, he didn't use a tritone in the right hand.

Taking a closer look and playing your last chord, I can see where what you were doing...I just probably would have voice it different. I may have added the Ab somewhere in the left hand.

Well its a basic template for that progression. I guess you can do whatever you want with it. I just learnt it not too long ago.

I'm not saying anything is necessarily wrong with chord 5, I just didn't see it at first without the Ab...

...and I probably would have voiced the chord differently...just preference.

See the way you wrote your chord 5 makes it a Db maj 9 add 6 or something. My chord 5 is your chord 5 but with a flat 5. I dunno what the is called though.

My Chord 5- Db F G Bb C Eb. In fact, the F is optional and i would prefer not to have it there.

In this case, my gut feel would be to listen to how & what that chord sounds like..
But my initial judgement when I saw it was to call it a EbMaj/DbMaj..
