Hey people I'm new to the board I come and read things but never post.  I need help, I'm a bass guitar player and have been for about 5 years.  Now I'm trying to switch over to the keyboard because our keyboard player at our church left because another church offered more money.  My question is what is the most effective way to learn to play the keys and congregational songs and the chords to go to them.  I already know the the major scale and the degrees.  I can pick out a bassline on the keyboard because I play bass already but my problem is the chords.  I can't seem to get that together.  Can I get some help from somebody.

Hi Will.I.Am :)

Ferrente has posted many congregational songs targeted at helping beginner players (& the other levels as well)..

There are many other songs which you will find if you use the search feature.

Here is a thread with the unending list of songs that people have requested in the past:

I would also advise that you start learning the stuff posted on The LGM MUSIC Theory Ultimate Collection:

Yeah it can't be easy. Our bass player sometimes tries to play keys at times but it is really painful watching him. He knows the bass lines but his fingering is so bad it looks painful. You do have a leg up over a lot of people who are just starting out in that you have played an instrument before and know how and what to practice.  My guess is you already know music theory so you won't be asking what a major scale is and what not.

If you want to learn i suggest you get Jermaine Griggs' Gospelkeys 101 and start from there. Its a good resource.

All the best man.

If you say the dude already has some theory behind him, & he wants to know how to play congregational songs, then I would say he should go for Gospelkeys 202..I've had many people recommend that to me for that specific purpose. ;)

Well the reason i suggested 101 was that he needs the basic chord fingerings. 101 helps with that. 202 is just going to introduce some advanced chord fingerings that he may not be able to come to grips with yet.

True man, my bad..
I'm always left speechless when watching guitarists'/ bassists' fingerings..

my sister & I have completely different fingerings..but now she's just learnt these cool fingering patterns from this jazz class she's taking..quite easy to grasp too 8)
