MIDI USB Cable
« on: May 14, 2008, 07:54:25 AM »
OK so i am really trying to start making MIDI files and i went to Circuit-City and bout a 4-pin USB cable thinking it would fit. I get home only to find out that it is WAY too small to fit the USB port at the back of my board. Imagine how foolish i felt. I had spent $30 on that thing.

1) I didn't know USB cables were so expensive.

2) What cable type should i use to connect my board to my PC? I am using a Yamaha PSR E403 and the manual says any standard USB cable. I had no idea USB cables even came in different sizes.

Thanks.

I didnt know they cost that much either. Did you shop around online?

You probaly need the one that is square shaped, as oposed to the small ones. Hit up a computer store like microcenter instead of going to a place like circuit city.

Many companies seem to making thier own usb cables that fit only thier products. I think I have like 4 different kinds in my house.

Thanks man. I just did a quick Google search on USB cables and went to Musicians Friend. You are right, i DO need the square USB cable. I bought the one that says "mini" instead. Not only that but they cost about $13 on average, as opposed to the $30 one i bought.

I am really annoyed at myself. I have already ripped open the packaging and torn it to shreds. I hope i can get some kind of store credit or something.  :-\ :'(.

Why the heck do they make those plastic packages so darn hard to open?  >:( >:(

MY friend had that board and I just told him to get the USB midi cable from M-audio because you can use them on any keyboard that has midi on them. Not all keyboards have the USB port in them yet. In this situation I would had took the cable from my printer and used that LOL! I don't use the printer that much anyway.

I just recently bought mine off Ebay for 18 bucks including shipping.  You want a MIDI to USB cord.

I went to Best Buy and they told me that a mouse cord was going to work.  I laughed and rebuked that in the name of Jesus!

My question is do you have to use a computer to make midi files? I have the MO8 w/ Cubase and my computer says that I don't have the right audio input driver or whatever. I have the USB cable do I need to have midi cables too? What do I need to do?

You might need the USB midi cable cause my usb port won't work (not a big deal ...for me anyway)on my MO. It pick up on the PC but won't show on Sonar/Reason/Cubase.

Why not?  I use a regular USB cable that I've used to connect my S90ES and my Motif 7 to my macbook pro to use with Garageband, Reason, and Native B4.

There you have it!
I have a number of USB cable for various items, so was never prepared to buy 1 for a board. Fortunatley te printer 1 fits the board.
but unfortnately the board is not "smart" enough to make midis without connecting to the computer

*Musiciansfriend 8) is my #2 shop behid this online music store here in SA (only becuase I don't own a Credit card)..

Do you have to have a specific program in order to make MIDI files on the MO8? Cubase SUCKS!! I thought that all I had to do was hook it up and it would start working...but that is certainly not the case. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

You need some kind of sequencer program to make midi files...I guess you want to say that Cubase sucks (it does is SOME cases) is that you can't get that USB driver to pick up. Honestly, I not surprised cause of that stupid VIsta! When you can, get a USB-MIDI cable, cause it does the same thing that the USB port does.

Thats why I use a pair of scissors to open them. Make sure you cut away from your body. You can use box cutter too. I repeat make sure you cut away from your body. ;D
