I do it the same way a singer learns to sing a song that they've heard on the radio or cd. A singer knows which notes to sing, because he/she is familiar with the location of the notes in thier vocal range. Likewsie, we musicians have to know the location of the notes on the keyboard

But that takes a whole lot of practice to master that. (I used to pactice for like 20 hrs a week)

You also have to know all of the major scales, that will make it easier to know which key you're in.

When I started out, I would just play the melody. As I've grown, I've learned to play chords and harmony parts. Now I'm trying to learn how to play the correct bass notes, which I have a problem hearing. :(

To be honest, you just have to sit at the keyboard and try to figure out the soprano note. thats what the lead singer will be singing.  I suggest that you consider taking reading lessons as well as gospel  music lessons.  Or you can search this site for better advice than I can give.

Hi JJJoe.  I asked a similar question not too long ago.  I did a search and made a compilation of all the former posts that I felt helped me the most.  The main question I asked was, "how do you learn to play a song by ear".  It seems like that is what you are really asking in a nutshell.  At some point, you will learn the importance of getting the bass notes down, but that is something we will talk about later.  Click the link below.  It helped me!
