Ya Gotta Know These??
« on: February 14, 2008, 04:54:38 PM »
Someone has probably asked this before, and if so, pardon me.  But what ten songs should every church musician know backwards and forward in all "popular" keys that they can play at the drop of a hat, and in a very dynamic way.  I say:  Amazing Grace, I won't Complain  His Eye is on the Sparrow,  Blessed Assurance,  Wade in the Water,  There is a Fountain, May the Work I've Done, Speak For Me, Glory Glory Hallelujah, Victory is Mine, God be With You. Which songs do you feel the new piano or organ player should absolutely put in his/her toolbox as standards? (of course, along with other songs that they are working on)

That all depends on the denomination of the church. Each one has thier own special songs that they do.

1 Yes Lord
2 Swing Low Sweet Chariot
3 Holy Holy Holy
4 great is thy faithfulness
5 Blessed Assurance
6 Down At the Cross
7 When you call on jesus he will answer prayer ( this song is very similar too many other so if you know one you can basically play the others like "God is a Good God" etc)
8 Doxology
9 Pass me not o gentle savior
10 I gotta praise

We barely sing half of these songs at church, but I'll learn them all anyway coz I want to be ready in & outa season.

It all depends on what your denomination is and where you live. If they dont sing these songs in your part of the globe, then you probaly wont need to learn them. But most of the songs that we posted are pretty much standard in the US

Those aren't the standard in my church.   Maybe Great is thy Faithfulness.

We do stuff like

His eye is on the Sparrow.
We've come this Far by faith
I will trust in the Lord
This is the day
Negro National Anthem ( Lift Every Voice and Sing)
Can't Nobody Do me like Jesus
Amazing Grace
Precious Lord Take My hand
The Blood that Jesus Shed for Me
I surrender all

And that is just the stuff out of the hymnal.

Most popular in my church are-:

Over all the earth (reign in me)
O how I love Jesus
I surrender all
What a mighty God we serve
I will enter in his gate
I command my hands
Anointing fall on me
Bless the Lord O my soul
Jesus your my firm foundation
Thank you lord.

We do all those too, but he only asked for ten. I love hymns, so I could go on forever lol

It usually ends with a 10 minute shout. if you want audio, let me know, I got a pretty sick version of it

Hello everyone,
What are some standard songs piano players should know if we were to go out to play somewhere. Like oldies, pop songs, gospel songs, jazz, r&b, etc. Thanks

I still hold with the list posted at the beginning of this thread.  There are songs for: devotion, baptising, funerals, congregational, general, and one or two that visiting people always tend to sing.  Others posted good lists too. This post is relevant to the one posted below.

Or you can learn a Richard Smallwood CD in every key and call it a day. 8)

Hehehe, I don't see myself doing that anytime soon...1st I should get all the songs right in their recorded keys before engaging in such sojourn ;D

At my church, they frown alot upon hyms, but nowadays the players are able to change what was once "boring" to something much liked by playing a hybrid of sounds & adding modulation..
