A short line placed above or below a staff to accommodate notes higher or lower than the range of the staff.

Interestingly, guitar music is one octave lower than written....we shoud be in the bass cleff, but doing so would require the use of even more ledger lines.

The idea is to extend the staff in whichever direction. Back at one time, music was actually written with about 15 staff lines, but it was very hard to read all those lines just close together. So, they came up with the idea of using a pair (for a grand staff, like piano music) of five line staves, with space between for a single "ledger line" for middle C.

Notes higher than the treble staff are rendered on ledger lines, as well as notes lower than the bass staff.  Think of it as a little ladder sitting on top of the staff.

The concept is not perfect, it is hard to sight read music that has many ledger lines (like when the ladder gets more than 3 or 4 steps).  For that reason, other signs are also used (like 8va or 15 va - meaning to play an octave or two octaves higher - 8vb or 15vb - meaning to play an octave or two octaves lower).

Just another part of the way that music is represented on paper.

This is a guitarist's forum... we'll have no sheet music here, please  ;)  ;)  ;)  ;)

(kidding of course--however, personally, I'm allergic lol)

Reminds me of the old joke...how do you get a guitar player to stop playing? Put sheet music in front of him.  :-X

'Course, there's all of the other musician jokes, too...and then the jokes about drummers.  ;D

tabs are actually sometimes (most) more effective in learning a guitar part because it helps show fret and neck position.....whereas sheet music just shows notes and you figure out how best to play them. Not better or worse...just makes it a little easier.

I have to agree. Even if the tab is wrong (which most internet tabs are), it gets you in the ballpark, then it's up to you to figure out the rest, which does train your ear. It might take a bit at a time, but it's still helpful.

My cousin took a couple years of jazz in college, and they even use tab as a teaching tool. He can read tab at speed... freaky lol.

Before tabs came around there was and now reissued the almighty 1955 "Mickey Baker's Complete Course in Jazz Guitar book-1 & 2". Years ago, they cost $1.50 each, now they cost $7.95 but worth every note on the pages.

Yea;I believe if you going to become a TRUE musician.Learn to read music, and the heck with tabs. When it is time to learn a new song, your m.o.m is going to hand you sheet music, trust me,it will not have tabs on it.They do not have time to baby sit anybody.Tabs have been more harmful than helpful.Did PRINCE,and JIMI,depend on tabs.Like someone said, they wrong most of the time.So we need to stop taking the easy way out,AND STEP UP TO THE PLATE.Sorry brothers,i am ready to take my game to another level. What i have seen as of now,IT IS NOT HARD. 8) MY TARHEELS LOST :'( :'( :'( :'(

Umm... did Jimi read sheet music?

I personally, refuse to play anything note-for-not anyhow. Tell me what key you're in, or what the prog. is, but other than that--unless it's vitally fundamental to the song--You're getting what I throw out. Oh, and expect it to change each time the song is played  :)

sheet music isn't written guitar....especially gospel sheets. all you need is a chord sheet. tabs are useful when learning licks and phrases. Like I said before....sheet music won't help you with where the notes fall on the neck, etc. Tabs will.

It's not taking the easy way out....it's taking advantage of a tool that can help you. Sometimes we make it way harder than it has to be.

Yea,i feel what you are saying. For some reason, i feel more like a TRUE musician,if i learn what  all the little notes mean on sheet music.By the way, your solo was truly off the hook(Gibby got me using this slane, that mean GREAT) ;)
