Hey LGM,

I wanted to post a copy of the chat Chevonee and I had last night on YIM.  (If you're not on there you should be..)  We had a great conversation on passing chords that I thought I'd share with everyone.  YIM can be a VERY useful means of knowledge transfer because you're actually chatting with the person in real time.

Disclaimer: I know this is long but it's worth the read.. Trust Me...

chevonee: True...I was telling ddw4e about how I've learned to follow
the flow and not just try to show off
da_nati_maestro: Exactly.. Soloing on the chord tones will certainly do
that.. If u check out www.jazzbooks.com Jamey Aebersold has a FREE pdf
Jazz Handbook that talks about soloing, scales, jazz rhythms, playing
the blues and a bunch of other stuff.. U should check it out
chevonee: Sam Tolberts course helps with soloing as well
chevonee: Ok I gotta check that out
da_nati_maestro: Yeah.. I used to go through that course when I was
first starting out..
da_nati_maestro: I got another jazzy move.. That I'll let u preview...
da_nati_maestro: Its a substitution move for the 5 chord..
chevonee: ok
da_nati_maestro: In the key of C.. Ur 2-5-1 is Dm7 - G7 - CM7.. u'd
probably play it like this D/FACE to G/FABD to C/EGBD..
da_nati_maestro: The move will change of what u play for G7
chevonee: ok
da_nati_maestro: The move is this GF/AbDbF, BbEbG, BEAb.. Hold the G F
with ur left hand and play those 3 chords in ur right hand while hold
the G F in ur left
da_nati_maestro: New progression would be:
da_nati_maestro: 1. D/FACE
da_nati_maestro: 2. GF/AbDbF, BbEbG, BEAb
da_nati_maestro: 3. CG/BDEG
da_nati_maestro: Wat u think?
chevonee: Nice
chevonee: How do you develop passing chords?
da_nati_maestro: I do it like this.. What ever chord I want to pass to
lets say AbMaj7 I approach it from a 5th away which would be Eb..
da_nati_maestro: Every chord can be approached/preceeded by a dominant
7th chord a 5th away.. With this in mind I know I want to play some type
of Eb7 before I get to the AbMaj7..
chevonee: This is sweet!!
da_nati_maestro: Dominant 7th chords give u the most flexibility to add
alterations so I start with a Basic Eb9 voicing Eb/GBbDbF
da_nati_maestro: 1. Eb/GBbDbF
da_nati_maestro: 2. Ab/GBbCEb
da_nati_maestro: Ok that's cool but lets make it crazier...
da_nati_maestro: Lets alter the Eb9 chord by flatting the 9th... Fb or E
we get Eb7 b9 or Eb/GBbDbE
da_nati_maestro: 1. Eb/BbDbEG (changed inversion)
da_nati_maestro: 2. Ab/CEbGBb
da_nati_maestro: Ok that's cool but lets make it crazier....
chevonee: :-O crazier than this
da_nati_maestro: Lets alter the Eb7 b9 by sharping the 5th.. (Bb)# or B
we get Eb 7 b9 #5 or Eb/GBDbE
da_nati_maestro: 1. Eb/GBDbE
da_nati_maestro: 2. Ab/CEbGBb
da_nati_maestro: We can get crazier... lol...
chevonee: Now that is jammin
chevonee: I've got alot to add to my arsenal now
da_nati_maestro: Let alter the Eb7 b9 #5 by sharping the 9th.. F# and
keeping the 5th sharpened we get Eb/GBDbF#
da_nati_maestro: 1. Eb/GBDbF#
da_nati_maestro: 2. Ab/BbCEbG
da_nati_maestro: That one was a Eb7 #9 #5
da_nati_maestro: Now let me add two more things here...
da_nati_maestro: For all of these Eb7 chords we played Eb in the bass
well now we can do something on these dominant 7th called a tri-tone
substitution.. A tritone is the interval between two note that are a #4
or b5 away from each other.. A is a tritone away from Eb so u can
substitute the Eb in the bass or an A and play the same right hand
chords
chevonee: :-?
chevonee: Ok so you're saying that instead of Eb...I can use A correct?
da_nati_maestro: For example Eb/GBDbF# with tritone sub for bass note
would now be A/GBDbF#
da_nati_maestro: Yup in the bass in ur left hand....
da_nati_maestro: Try playing the chords with either bass notes...
da_nati_maestro: Lastly...
chevonee: ok i got it
da_nati_maestro: Remember I said u can approach any chord with a
dominant 7 chord a 5th away from it.. We used AbMaj7 as our example
target chord but there are 2 other chords we could have used.. Abmin7 or
Ab7
chevonee: So what would be your advice for practicing things such as
this?
da_nati_maestro: All of the Eb dominant chords I gave u can be used to
go to either a AbMaj7, Abmin7 or Ab7.. Let ur ear be the judge on which
altered dominant 7th to use when..
da_nati_maestro: Here's how I would practice this...
da_nati_maestro: 1st.. Take just one of the alter dominant 7th chord
that you like and transpose and learn it in every key.. That's why I try
to write it out in those cool chord postings.. Then practice using that
alter voicing to resolve to the target chord for instance..
da_nati_maestro: Practice... Eb7 #9 #5 to AbMaj9
da_nati_maestro: 1. Eb7 #9 #5 to AbMaj9 Progression
da_nati_maestro: 2. Eb7 #9 #5 to Abmin9 Progression
da_nati_maestro: 3. Eb7 #9 #5 to Ab7 Progression
da_nati_maestro: Then change keys to Ab
da_nati_maestro: 1. Ab7 #9 #5 to DbMaj9 Progression
da_nati_maestro: 2. Ab7 #9 #5 to Dbmin9 Progression
da_nati_maestro: 3. Ab7 #9 #5 to Db7 Progression
da_nati_maestro: Then change keys to Db, then Gb, etc all the way around
circle of 4th/5th..
chevonee: I'm going to write all of this information off so I can put it
in my practice notebook...this is an eye opener FA' REAL
da_nati_maestro: Once u feel u have the chord change under ur fingers
then take a song u like and practice adding the alteration before the 1
or 4 in those songs..
da_nati_maestro: I this certainly justifies the LGM usage of YIM.. lol
da_nati_maestro: I'm  glad this was beneficial
chevonee: Great stuff DaNat....I have alot to add to my arsenal. I
REALLY appreciate you taking out time with me. I'm about to go now but I
really look forward to chatting again with you. I have learned so much
already.
da_nati_maestro: Cool..
chevonee: Very beneficial.....
chevonee: Gotta go but you stay blessed
da_nati_maestro: Hey!!!!
da_nati_maestro: If u don't mind I'm going topost this transcription on
LGM?
chevonee: No i don't mind
da_nati_maestro: Get folks hype about YIM chats
da_nati_maestro: Cool cya later!!
chevonee: I'm saving a copy of this stuff
da_nati_maestro: Me too!
chevonee: Thanks Good night
da_nati_maestro: G' night
