I Think this Might be a Dumb Question......
« on: October 10, 2007, 01:21:03 PM »
But here goes!!!!!

Is there any kind of theory, rhyme or reason to chord placement? Im asking because I just dont know. I have been learning chords for awhile so i have a pretty extensive vocab....Its just .......WHERE TO PUT THESE PHAT CHORDS!!!!!!

I mean I'll hear my favorite Players play a song with these nice progressions and nice and full sounding. Then I'll play the same song and it just dont sound as interesting :'(......... ?/?............. >:(

Then the killer is i'll hear some young kat been playing every bit of two months(exagerrating a bit) come with wide open rendition sounding like my favorite player.
Dont get me wrong...I aint no slouch my no means........I just want to be able to play what i hear in my head. Is there any KEYS to Placement?????

If so...help a brotha out!!!!!! :-\

Dude!

I know how you feel! I think chord placement is a life-long learning process. You never stop learning about placement. As society changes, our idea of what sounds good changes, so it creates new chord progressions or chord placements. Anyway...What I did to open my ear a little to this stuff was practice my diatonic progressions. In the key of C: If I normally played a C in the bass and an F chord in my right hand, I'd move the F to a Gmajor or Aminor. I'd do the same with the bass. If I normally played a B in the bass with a Dmin chord, then I'd try using the same pattern starting on a different note in the bass. It produced some weird sounds, but some of them gave me a eureka moment.
