Need Advice....!
« on: October 08, 2007, 09:51:09 AM »
WHATS UP LGM. I HAVE BEEN PLAYING THE KEYBOARD FOR ABOUT 2 YRS NOW.  WHEN I STARTED OUT THE FIRST AND REALY THE ONLY KEY I PLAYED IN WAS (Ab). WELL NOW I’M STILL PLAYING IN (Ab) BUT NOW I HAVE GOTTEN A BAD HABIT OF USING THE TRANSPOSE BOTTON A LOT.  I REALLY WANT TO PLAY IN EVERY KEY BECAUSE NOW I HAVE TOOKEN AN INTREST IN THE ORGAN WHICH DOEN’T HAVE A TRANPOSE BUTTON. AND I REALLY DON’T WANT TO DEPEND ON THE TRANSPOSE BUTTON AS A CRUCH TO PLAY A SONG. I GUESS MY QUESTION IS HOW WOULD I GO ABOUT “RETEACHING” MYSELF TO PLAY IN EVERY KEY?

Learn your scales by using the number system.And then take what u already know how to play up in half step.Also learn your progression. T-block has put up a lot of info so search his post

Georgiagurl.....I know you know betta than this!!! LOL ;D :D ;D  Naw, I'm just kidding now so don't nut up on me. But I told you to click on the very top thread and you'll find everything that you need to learn to play in every key. If you don't understand something just ask T-block and he'll explain it to ya, just like he did for me. As a prelude though it's all about the numbers (using the major scale)

Eb  F  G  Ab  Bb  C  D  Eb
1   2   3   4   5   6   7   1

Bb  C   D   Eb    F   G   A  Bb
1    2   3   4      5   6   7   1

B   Db   Eb   E   Gb   Ab   Bb  B
1    2    3     4   5     6    7    1

Ab  Bb   C    Db   Eb   F    G   Ab
1    2     3     4    5    6    7    1

major chord     1, 3, 5

minor chord     1, b3, 5

dominant 7th   1, 3, 5, b7

augmented      1, 3, #5

diminished       1, b3, b5

diminished 7     1, b3, b5, bb7

Just put the notes with the corresponding letters and do that with each chord that you play. Go to the thread at the very top for more information. It's easier said than done I know, but it can be done. With more practice using this info, you'll be playing in every key b4 you know it. I still don't play shouting music very well in every key but I can atleast play a song in each key. Some keys I still  can't play riffs or licks in but I'm practicing so that I can soon be able to do that. Here is a little key that may help you when you go to that LGM Ultimate Music Theory Collection thread. God bless!

Db= C#      B= Cb      Ebb= D
Eb= D#      C= B#      Abb= G
Gb= F#      E= Fb       Dbb= C
Ab= G#      F= E#
Bb= A#      Bbb= A

Here is something else that I want to share that may help. I'm going to use the key of C to demonstrate how to transpose without using the transpose button. The C major scale is C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C.  Just in case you need an explanation. If you play the C7 chord= C-E-G-Bb...If you want to change that and play Ab7 according to the chart you would take everything either down 4 half steps or up 8 half steps, Because, from C to B is 1, from C to Bb is 2, from C to A is 3 and from C to Ab is 4. which will = Ab, C, Eb, Gb (Ab7)

How did I get 8 half steps?  Just simply subtract the number that you get from 12 and it will give you the opposite end. That is, if you subtract 4 from 12, you'll get 8. This means that if you count up (instead of down), you'll notice that Ab is 8 half steps up from C. These two numbers should always equal 12.  You can make this chart using all 12 keys. Hope this doesn't confuse anyone.

C to B (1 half step down; 11 half steps up)
C to Bb (2 half step down; 10 half steps up)
C to A (3 half step down; 9 half steps up)
C to Ab (4 half step down; 8 half steps up)
C to G (5 half step down; 7 half steps up)
C to Gb (6 half step down; 6 half steps up)
C to F (7 half step down; 5 half steps up)
C to E (8 half step down; 4 half steps up)
C to Eb (9 half step down; 3 half steps up)
C to D (10 half step down; 2 half steps up)
C to Db (11 half step down; 1 half steps up)
C to C (12 half step down; 12 half steps up)

You know what, I enjoy the instructional DVD's that I have but for the most part they stick to one key which is very unfortunate. Jamal Hartwell loves the key of Eb and alot of his stuff is in Eb, which is also my favorite key ;D. That stuff doesn't really help when it comes to playing in all keys....but I still love it though ;)

So, then you didn't really teach yourself, u took chords others were using, correct?

If so, then u should really teach yourself to play in Ab the right way as well as the other keys.  Like it's been said before, the topic at the top of the page contains all the links u need to learn to play in every key.  Start with the first one, then work your way down.

Also, alot of keys a relational.  For instance: alot of the chords that you play in Ab you also play in C#.  As you're learning look/listen to figure out how you can use what you already know to make learning new keys/concepts/techniques easier.
