Here is something else that I want to share that may help. I'm going to use the key of C to demonstrate how to transpose without using the transpose button. The C major scale is C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. Just in case you need an explanation. If you play the C7 chord= C-E-G-Bb...If you want to change that and play Ab7 according to the chart you would take everything either down 4 half steps or up 8 half steps, Because, from C to B is 1, from C to Bb is 2, from C to A is 3 and from C to Ab is 4. which will = Ab, C, Eb, Gb (Ab7)
How did I get 8 half steps? Just simply subtract the number that you get from 12 and it will give you the opposite end. That is, if you subtract 4 from 12, you'll get 8. This means that if you count up (instead of down), you'll notice that Ab is 8 half steps up from C. These two numbers should always equal 12. You can make this chart using all 12 keys. Hope this doesn't confuse anyone.
C to B (1 half step down; 11 half steps up)
C to Bb (2 half step down; 10 half steps up)
C to A (3 half step down; 9 half steps up)

C to F (7 half step down; 5 half steps up)
C to E (8 half step down; 4 half steps up)
