i think it probably could a little cheaper its been out for a good while but its a 88 key and you most likely paying for the name fantom the new fantom is still running for almost 3000 and the yamaha es8 is the same it runs now for about 1500 or less and the xs8 is 3100 so i would say no you didnt get jipped.

The Roland Fantom S is really old technology, though, and miles behind many boards that are available now within that price range brand new.  (assuming that the one you put in lay-a-way was not new) Being such, the S doesn't demand much in price. It would be hard to say if the price you got was bad or not, but I don't believe that I would pay that much for a keyboard that old. Korg TR 8, Yamaha MO 8 Roland FP 4, Roland RD 700SX, RD 300, Triton Extreme (maybe) can all be had brand new for a hundred dollars or so more or less than the board you mentioned. THERE ARE OTHERS. The technology allowing improvement in the sounds available between the S and the newer boards would be noticable.  Other factors would be noticable too. (mechanics and operating systems)  I know that sometimes one cannot actually just go out and buy the board that they want in cash and that not all music stores have lay-a-way.  However, when you consider, the effect is the same as lay-a-way if one just saves up the price of a board and then chooses the one that they want freely. The only reason that I said anything at all is because you did lay this item away and still have some choice. You didn't say how much you invested.   Even in the face of store policies in place, sometimes adjustments can be made.  Maybe you are happy with your purchase. If so, I hope that you enjoy your new board.  If not, be aware that there were and are options to consider.  $1500.00 is a lot of money (I know that it is for me), and you want value for a dollar.   Pardon me if I stuck my nose too far into your affairs.  All of this is, of course, just my opinion.
