How do you figure out alot of James halls music...I am trying to learn caught up and he is sweet i know.and he uses alot of complicated progressions from what i can hear...can anyone help please..and just one more thing...I am not looking for the whole song just the basic form and if you could spell the chords out and put wether they are dim or sevenths or min. because I am trying to learn to read music in that way..I usually would not be asking for it like this but I have to learn these by wed. of this week...so any help would be appreciated...thanks in advance...

Based on all of the songs I've learned from him, he uses an awful lot of diminished and minor chords.

James Hall has a classical and jazz background and he puts that in his music. Then you have John Peters and Melvin Crispell who are awesome musicians that can come up with anything they want and make it just so unique.

Yeah I know those songs.......just don't have the time to spell tem out (sorry...........colllege sucks lol).  When playing James Hall you have to think outside the box.  He doesnt really follow "traditional" gospel movements.  You gotta be willing to grind it out.  At first his stuff sounds really weird to the ear but it will come along.

He Is Sweet I know, basically follows this pattern:

Verse:
BbMaj7, Ab9

Chorus:
Ebm9, Ab7 b9, Fm7, Bb7 b9

Bridge:
E13 #5 b9, C7 #9, Fm7, Bb7 b9, Bb7 #9

Vamp:
Ebm9, Fm7, Bb7 b9

Ending:
Gbsus2, Db/Gbsus2, Fm7 *tap the B to get that off sound* (repeat)
A7 #5 #9, Bb


That's the gist of it. Just play around with the chords.


Yea. As dd said, he uses a lot of classical jazz. If you study Ella Fitzgerald, you'll get close to his sound. There is one Ella song, called "Bei Mir Bist du Schön", that I'd like to snatch the music from. It'll sound sweet with some Gospel.

john peters whom im a fan of doesnt really arrange as much as james does........james does arrange alot of his own stuff then gives it to melvin to complete
