Hello Sisters & Brothers in Christ!!
« on: August 28, 2007, 03:54:53 PM »
Hello Bros & Sisters in Christ....
I am in need of some advice because I am trying to expand in my music and I hear things when I am playing like other "notes" or "chords"..... but there is one thing that puzzles me..........How do you play a right hand solo with just single notes but still stay in beat and fall right back into your pattern and keep right on going...Does anyone know what I mean???

I have a problem with this because the director points to me and say "play"
and then everyone in the church call my name and say "play girl"  and I be like what do I do or play?????  Thanks very much any advice will be a great help to me I'm sure.  There is always room for improvement!! :)

Well, for one thing you need to have one hand solid with knowing the notes or chords so u can focus on the other hand.  Since u wanna solo with your RH, i suggest having the bassline down in your LH first.

Now, improvising usually depends on the song your playing.  So, my question to u is what kind(s) of songs do u want to learn to solo with?
Real musicians play in every key!!!

RH Solo...I'm assuming you already know your scales, so practice being creative with the application of using them, also you can use the chord structure along with scales to create riffs.  I would practice using slow songs first or take a basic progression and slow it down to get your timing with the left hand whether using a bass line or LH chording.

OK, imagine you are a singer but you're on the keyboard etc. when they say "play" thats kinda like putting the spot light on you. Everybody wants to hear you "solo" the song on the keyboard. Lets say the song is " Amazing Grace", if you've been playing it in the congregation mode then you're probably chording around their singing. Now they want you to "play" meaning make the keyboard sing. Now as spoken earlier this is where you're knowledge of scales, trills, chord embelishment, things you only play when you're practicing by yourself come out. I'll post a video example to demonstrate what I mean........
I love music, any kind of music.

Thanks for the information and the videos of examples of "soloing" in a song.  I really appreciate all the help I received.  I think I need to learn some Jazz gospel chords or something to really do what you do.  But that was the idea of what I need to do in my playing.  I do gospel music and some contemporary but I am not that good but still praying and asking God for the annointing to what I hear and feel when I am playing my music.  May God bless you all.......Suddygirl
