Ad - Libbing while playing
« on: September 27, 2007, 12:54:40 AM »
for all the piano....organ players

as a musician / tenor (cuz i tend to have to sing tonor when the choir sings when there are no tenors there to sing) ......i tend to run into a problem.  there are a couple songs that I lead, with ad-libbing parts.  some of those songs I sing while I'm playing the song.   frequently i find it rather difficult to get into the song and ad-lib because im too busy looking to make sure im playing the right chords.

does this happen to any of you??   any suggesstions??

Boy does it ever!! The only thing that I do to get better is practice singing it and playing it alone....I think that the longer you sing and play, the better you'll get though.

Hello..

I'd work on mastering playing the keys in such a way that you don't have to look or even think about what your doing.  I'm sure you drive your car and sing at the same time because you've masted how to drive your car.  Same thing with the keys, if you master just playing the keys then you can sing while playing without effort.

Also another thing..

When you're starting out playing and singing at the same time, it will make you play very straight and simple.  I had a friend of mine who was the MD for this group tell all of the musicians to sing every song while we played them.  It would make us stay in the pocket and just play the song.

It worked too.. lol..
