"Good" Pride? "Bad" Pride?
« on: July 27, 2007, 11:11:25 AM »
From the "Reality Advice" thread:

That's the "good" pride. It's okay to have pride in oneself. But when it get to the point that you think you look & are better than someone else, that becomes the "bad" pride.

This is something I'd like to discuss.

Proverbs 16:18 - "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."

If we go by the Word, how is there a good pride?  The word doesn't say some pride, it just says pride.  So is there really such a thing as "good" Pride?

Absolutely!!

What's wrong in having pride in oneself. A person who doesn't have pride in onself is a person who has low self-esteem. I don't think God intends for us to look down upon ourselves.

Take the scripture in the content of what it is talking about. This pride that the scripture speaks about is when you think too highly of yourself.

God says I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. I'm proud of that fact!! No sin there. The sin would come when I think I'm more fearfully and more wonderfully made than another created being.

I can't be proud that I got an 'A' in my grad school course?

I can't be proud of my occupation?

I believe we should have pride but as it has been said before you have to also know when to be humble. Pride comes before the fall. Sometimes our Pride can cause us to miss out on blessings and honestly hearing from the Lord.

I'm proud to be me but not to the point of arrogance or ignorance, thats when it gets ugly.
I'm destined for greatness!!!

Dude, I get the question... but, uhhh... if I were to go down the list of things I'm "proud" of myself for... y'all would really think I was prideful (in the bad way.... lol)!  LOL!!!

Seriously, there is NOTHING wrong with being proud of yourself or your accomplishments, as long as you give glory to God for it, and not take credit yourself.  Everything I have and do is because of Him.  Every degree, certificate, outfit, hat, car, house, shoe, dollar, child, client, paycheck, etc... it all comes from HIM, and I'm proud to have it.

I kinda don't have too much to say on this topic bc Sis T really sealed it in the other thread... she set it straight, I thought.

Im sorry for beating on this dead horse...something worries me.

Heres my worry...
Isn't pride (as a word and state in itself) fuelled of vile? I mean isn't it in the same class as revenge? I mean i recently heard (someway, somehow) that as christians, we should have revenge on the devil. Again revenge, doesnt sound at all godly, and pride as an attribute is sounding very similar. "Vengeance is Mine, saith the Lord". I understand the sentiments surrounding the idea of pride (Whatever the instance, personal or collective. Whatever the level of achievement, i would assume that it should be called something other than pride) is pride really a God-like quality? As i type this now, theres an increased awareness in my spirit about the first chapter of the bible. (Paraphrasing) When God saw all that HE had made, HE saw that it was good. Thats what it should be.

Thank You.
No controversy intended.
