Despite our communication technology, no invention is as effective as the sound of the human voice.

The drummer didnt mess up.  The rest of the band were dragging and trying to stay with the choir.  Thats all wrong.  The choir does not control the tempo.  The drummer was on and everyone else was off.

The primary reason for this is the size of the church.  The sound of the drums are getting to the far end of the choir late.  Therefore causing them to respond late and cause a drag.  And yes, of course, the drummer gets blamed for bad acoustics.  Thats why being a good musician also involves playing to the acoustics of the room and the available sound system.  In the case of that clip, I usually just KISS!!!  (Keep It Simple Stupid!!!)  ;)

GUY! Dead on! I was just about to point the same thing out before I read your post.

LOL. Am I missing something here? He ended the fill too early and that is what sped him up. That's why the guy behind the camera says "SLOW DOWN". You'll hear this right after the 46 seconds. Why do you think the drummer himsself slowed down after it happend?? SO HE COULD CATCH UP WITH THE CHOIR AND THE OTHER MUSICIANS!!!
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

the drummer sped up slightly thats the answer to this riddle the choir was on their original tempo from when they started singing tap the beat from where they begin to sing up until a good 10 secs of the song and u will hear him slowly speed up

If you notice in the clip, the choir started dragging slightly before the fill.  By the time he got to the fill, the choir was way off!  You guys need to LISTEN!  Its not that hard to understand!  The drummer was on!  The choir and the rest of the band was off!  Simple.  Now go, be fruitful and multiply!   ;D

Dude he did get off tempo with that lick. That lick got him off tempo. I counted the time. GB.

Nah the choir was behind the beat the whole time and if you listen no ones following the drummer not even the bassist... It sounds like the bassist is trying to get the beat from the choir and not the drummer. All these factors came to a train wreck when the drummer tried to fill! They should have mic'd the choir and gave the musicians monitors!

Guy if you are a drummer then you will very well know that everyone blames the drummer no matter who's wrong!!!!! From the get go of the choir coming in they were behind the beat!!!!!!

I dont think people are listening to the choir, just the drumming. You have to listen to everything separately and then put it in context. Im not going to say the drummer was the strongest Ive ever heard but he came out of the fill on time!

Lol, this is the craziest, and hopefully JFUNKY backs me up when I say this. I have played in big churches before and currently playing at a big one now. Certainly not as big as the church on the clip but its very large.....

IF you have played at huge churches, you know that when you play at a big huge church and the ENTIRE CHURCH IS SINGING TOGETHER, THEY WILL ALWAYS BE BEHIND THE BEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This will ALWAYS HAPPEN!!!!!! This is why you see drummers at big churches where headphones. If a huge church is singing together in UNISON, they will ALWAYS be on a different beat than the drummer.

Me, and the organist both have big speakers next to us so I don't have to wear headphones. OK, now the church usually claps when you hit the snare, right?  But whenever the church is singing a hymnal together and I hit the snare, I don't hear the clap until about 2 seconds later. That is why I don't look at them, I look at the organist, because it is important we stay on the same page.

And the musicians in this clip were on the same page until the fill came in. When I looked at it again, I noticed that the drummer had a more slower tempo than how it was originally done by LEVI. BUT THEN he did the fill in the normal time that it was done in.

Now go back in look at it,you will see that ALL MUSICIANS were on the very same page up until the fill. All his licks were extremely precise. On every hit, the organ and the bass player were hitting with him, UNTIL HE DID THE FILL. Even after the fill, he slowed down and got right back on tempo with them!
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

The drummer did speed up slowly starting from the beginning of the video to the part where he did the fill. The fill was on tempo but I guess what confused me was the fact that he sped up slowly and that got the choir even more behind than what they already were. GB.
