Now if this drummer is on here, I'm not trying to put you out, but I know this has happened to me plenty of times before, so don't feel bad. Around 46 seconds the drummer goes for the fill and you'll see what happens. And I hate it cuz everybody turns and looks at you and its so embarrassing!!!

Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

...yeah it happens.  The thing is that if you're not careful, you'll do it on this song on a regular.  I've heard many drummers have issues with this song. lol

...one cool thing is that this was "Choir Practice".  If it happens, it needs to happen here. ;)

...the dude in the "YELLOW SHIRT".  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

...this joka went and through the hands his way.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAAHA HAHHAAHAH

You're right JFunky, thank goodness my church choir hasn't gotten to it yet. I try to practice it on my spare time and it is probably one of the hardest songs I've ever tried to learn from a drumming perspective.

...the rhythm is very contageous. (sp?)  Me and a friend practice it from time to time.  I love the way the song swings and the drummer on the original track is killin'.  The thing is that everybody that I hear attempt to play the song ends up messing up. lol  You have to know where to place the fills and be very, very careful because one note misplaced will bring out the dude in the Yellow Shirt with his boyz.  ;D ;D ;D

Sput played on the original track. That guys kills man. He plays so loose it looks easy. That song is sick. I have been practicing that song for the choir I play for. I don't think it's that hard it's just knowing where to put the fills like JFunk said. At first it's a little challenging but when I get into the beat it all falls into place for me. I have practiced this song so much though it's not even funny. I want to sound authentic when I play this song and not like a cheap copy...lol. I think it's so cool when a fill comes out naturally without being forced. Here's the link of Myron Butler & LEVI doing this song live.

The drummer didnt mess up.  The rest of the band were dragging and trying to stay with the choir.  Thats all wrong.  The choir does not control the tempo.  The drummer was on and everyone else was off.

The primary reason for this is the size of the church.  The sound of the drums are getting to the far end of the choir late.  Therefore causing them to respond late and cause a drag.  And yes, of course, the drummer gets blamed for bad acoustics.  Thats why being a good musician also involves playing to the acoustics of the room and the available sound system.  In the case of that clip, I usually just KISS!!!  (Keep It Simple Stupid!!!)  ;)

Playing with bad acoustics is very difficult. That's why in churches like that you have to where headphones. But he was on the song the entire time UNTIL he went for that fill. The fill was too fast. He was about one count too early. And this is something that happens to drummers from time to time.

Yeah like Sheen said, " Keep it simple" When I have gigs in big places I always keep it nice a simple because If this happens to you at a big place with a Not So Good sound system, then everyone is going to be looking at you like you threw the whole song out of wack..... I played at a big church recently and they had CD player head phones which didn't work well because they didn't stay on my head!! :D I was just looking at the choir just to see their movements so I could stay on time.... :-\

Yo Yammieboy you need to make the metronome your girlfriend.
Your not suppose to follow the choir AND DON'T DEPEND ON EXTERNAL TIME MEASURES.

If you know where you started in the song the rest should take care of itself.

As for the video... it's probably a good thing that I don't know the song cause the drummer seemed to have covered himself well. Meh...

Sustained!! My wife and I were just talking about that while we were watching the clip. When you play it again, you realize the drummer didn't get off beat. Now the fill he did was kinda what threw the choir off, but he never got lost.

If I mess up, I'll admit it. But I hate that the fact that it's the drummer's fault that other musicians are "tempo-etically challenged."  I don't let musicians put that on me anymore. I'm too old and have lost all fear of repercussions of telling the truth. When another instrumentalist looks at me funny because they or another band member messed up with the tempo, I just look them in the eyes and say, "That was your fault." Or, "That was his fault." If they don't look at me, I don't say anything. But when they start trying to push blame, I quickly let them know that I'm not the one to take blame for something that I had no control over.

It's time out for that crap!!

I was just making sure that I was in the same spot.... I had to depend on the choir because the kit was behind a glass shield and it was a big church so everthing was pretty much bouncing off of everything so t was very hard to hear.... I know what your saying though I need to work with a metronome incase something like this happens again...

Dude he did get off tempo with that lick. That lick got him off tempo. I counted the time. GB.

I have to agree. The choir actually never got off their tempo even with the noticeable latency. Seems like he may have came out of the fill a little too fast.

Are you guys serious?? :-\ :-\ He was right on beat. The venue was to big for the drums not to have mics on them and no sound insolation from what I can hear and see. If you look at the vid, you can see that the guy in the yellow shirt keeps his head moving and never jumps the beat!! He was on with the drummer!! So obviously he did not miss the beat!!!!  (the lick could have been cleaner though!!!!) ;) ;)

Dude, do you even play the drums??? Just asking man because I don't know how you can't count it and still see that he didn't get off tempo. Dosen't matter what the guy was dancing and what tempo he was dancing to, just count and you will see that he did the lick too early and obviously ended early. GB.

EXACTLY!! The whole reason I posted this video is because he ENDEDTHE LICK TOO EARLY AND GOT OFF. If he stayed on the tempo, every musician around him including the director would not have turned around and looked at him.

This used to happen to me alot because 1-) I used to get real excited about the fill I'm getting ready to do so I would either go in too early or too late.  That is why it's impotant to relax and not think too hard when playing. If you think too hard on a big fill or lick you are getting ready to do, 9 times out of 10 you are going to mess it up.
