Understanding What you Play!!
« on: May 15, 2007, 10:03:48 AM »
To All my Musician Friends:

Throughout my Life and Musical journey  I Can honestly Say that I have never had a Musical Mentor In my Life I Mean I have had people that would show me a Chord or Two but no one really took the time to sit down with me and really educate me on my instrument  NOT UNTIL YESTERDAY I was coming from work and  I Stopped by this Piano Shop to get a Few Scales in  and as  I was playing this Older Caucasian Guy approached me and complimented my sound then he walked out the Store and about 30 Seconds later he came back and asked me what was  I playing  then he proceeded to get on the Piano behind me and  Dropped some serious Science I mean this Cat was Jazz to the Core He played How Great Thou Are in G Natural which is a Popular Key for Jazz Musicians Most of “US” Don’t play in G  It was Crazy   I have been playing Boards for almost 12 years and  Learned so much from this Cat in 30 Minutes then I’ve learned in 5 years on my own and  I start to think  WOW if  I took Jazz  lessons/or had a MENTOR... that would expand my mind so Far...

It’s one thing to play a Phrase but it’s a Whole nother Beast to actually understand the phrase your playing and that’s what he showed me It wasn’t like he was showing me Mega Chords but the Fact that he took time to talk to me He gave me the names to the Chords that I was Playing and he showed me how to incorporate Chords in different areas   It was definitely an Experience

We as Gospel Musicians Have to come up there are no exceptions in any other GENRE why are we so limited to Certain Keys it’s time to learn our Crafts for Real !

Be Blessed

Wow!  :owith the exception of the exclamation point at the very end, there isn't a single use of punctuation in this whole thing. :-\

He threw two ellipses in there, and a colon. ;)

I been saying this for 2 years, and some still don't get it, or even care for that matter.  I'm glad you had a chance to meet that jazz person.  I'm sure it was a wonderful experience you will never forget, unless u get Altzheimers or amnesia. ;D

Hey, these guys posting here, and the ones who operate this site are something else, runs-in-12 keys.  They have been BETTER than helpful and will respond and have responded to the needs of persons entering the forum.  They take time out to post chords, make midis, post learning materials. They take time to teach theory, write out scales and progressions that are very tedious and time consuming. These things are invaluable to the learning musician.  They don't ask for a thing in return. I would class them as mentors.  A person would have to be running pretty fast to get ahead of what they do.  Somebody ought to say "amen".
