PDP sounds better than the Yamaha stage custom AND the Pearl Export. I believe the Export is made of poplar (JFunky, ER, Sabe: y'all correct me if I'm wrong). The Yamaha stage customs (which would be about the same price range) is made of Phillipine mahogany and falkata woods. The PDP FS kit is made of birch. 100% birch. Recording quality birch. I used to love Pearl. But I bought an FS kit, and I never turned toward Pearl again. Gigs, church, studio -- that FS (PDP) kit is not going to do you wrong.

As far as the price range that you're talking about. . . Pearl can't touch PDP. Don't get caught up in the hype of the names. Look at what they're made of.

I'm not a fan of DW products but I'd most definitely get the PDP over the Pearl because of the wood. I hate the sound of the poplar wood that Pearl used on the Exports and would definitely choose a maple or birch kit over the poplar. Now, if you talking about the new all maple Export then that's a different story.

PDP bro. That Pearl Export doesn't even come close. I own the PDP CX Maple and I love them. I've made my money back gigging with that kit in in just one weekend. PDP man!

...out of the FS Birch PDP and the Pearl EX you've posted.....the PDP hands down.  That's a great sounding kit and it is one of two 100% Birch Shell kits offered at that price since the Catalina Birch by Gretsch is discontinued and replaced by Maple Shells. >:(

...now, YES; consider looking into Yamaha's Tour Custom drum kit.  100% Maple shells.  Great kit.  The downfall is that you'll need to rehead the whole kit instantly because the heads are not what you may want. ;)  Modern Drummer Mag. even stated the same thing in their review.

...okay so....for all of you guys that are dissin' Pearl.....let's just say that yall haven't experienced the NEW 100% Maple Shells Export. ;)  That's a great soundin' kit.  Also, check out the new Vision Series Kit by Pearl which is made of Birch and Basswood.  They also sound very good.

...I would also like to welcome the new Sonor 3007 and 2007 kits to the intermediate or Semi Pro Level drum kit game.  Look into those as well.

...it's your turn now.  I apologize for adding kits to your list but it is better to have different options just in case you need 'em.

...Happy fishin'.

...are you sure about that?  When did Pearl ever make a 100% Birch Shell Export ?/?

...The only intermediate level kit that is Birch is the New Vision Series and it's not even a 100% Birch Shell kit.  It's Birch and Basswood mix.  You my friend may have a 100% Poplar Export. ;)
