Foot Speed
« on: April 12, 2007, 11:20:59 PM »
I'm having problem with my foot speed. My foot tends to go faster than i actually want it to go with single beats. It is like I have no control at times. Does anybody have any solutions?

I do. That used to happen to me......still does sometimes.
anyway.....control exercises will get that foot doing what u want it to do.
Kenny Aaronoff's Power workout 1&2 help for control......
practices "1 &'s " with the foot to.

others may have some other suggestions that might work better for u but
the key for everyone would be to do slow exercises......starting very slow builds good control

John Blackwell has a great exercise for your foot: just tapping quarter notes on the floor, with a consistent tempo.  you might want to take short breaks because your shins will start BURNING, but it's good because you are developing your muscle.  Then do eighth notes, just think Power over Speed, and the speed will come.

...When we saw Chris Coleman on a clinic setting, the same question was asked and he replied, "Accuracy over Speed".  What that means is that you need to be accurate with your strokes and develop "Control".

...here are some ways to develop Foot Control:  I got this exercise from Dave Weckl.   (Use a metronome for this and make sure you're sitting comfortably and have a good drum throne and not a folding chair.lol)  Count Quarter Notes out loud while the metronome is going.  Set the metronome at about 60 - 65.  If it's too hard, set it to a less BPM.

   1.  Play Whole Notes - 1 2 3 4

   2.  Play Half Notes - 1 2 3 4

   3.  Play Quarter Notes - 1 2 3 4

   4.  Play 8th Notes - 1 an 2 an 3 an 4 an

   5.  Play 8th Note Triplets - 1 la li  2 la li  3 la li  4 la li  (Tri-ple-let, Tri-ple-let, Tri-ple-let)

   6.  Play 16th Notes - 1 e an uh, 2 e an uh, 3 e an uh, 4 e an uh

...after you get done doing every step, combine them and do steps 1 through 6 together.  Do this heel down "and" heel up.

*when you get tired, stop.  Do not over work your foot.  The whole point of this exercise is to develop control and endurance.  Make sure you're comfortable at all times and your spring tension is at a comfortable setting.  Remember, Speed is a byproduct of Control.  Too many of us are very sloppy and uncontrolled when it comes to foot work. (Myself included)

...this exercise is excellent for control and if applied correctly and practiced daily, you'll end up doing that Jeremy Haynes foot bounce.  lol

Definitley a control issue. It IS NOT A SPEED ISSUE but a CONTROL ISSUE.

The Kenny Aronoff dvd is excellent suggestion for overall coordination?control studies.
Kick specific though get a good metronome that plays the subdivisions and practice Stick Control and Ted Reed's Syncoption also Steve Smith Drumset Technique dvd and Micheal Packer's dvd as well the Chris Coleman suggestions JFUNKY gave. Thomas Lang's two dvds are all about foot control.

Bottom line it is learning to play notation at various tempos properly and exactly.
