I don't have a problem when gospel artist preach.  You make it sound like a negative thing.  The offering part  was a little weird though.  I went to a Donnie McClurkin concert and he preached way more than he sang.  People were acting nasty and complaining.  I was shocked at some of the stuff Christian people were saying.  I personally enjoy a singer who can not only minister with song but also in speaking.  Those that just sing and have nothing to say, I have a hard time going to their concerts.

That's exactly why I don't go to events like midnight musicals.  People at these events only want to hear the music, they don't want to hear the word.

As Christians we have to be careful what we write and speak.  I would never refer to a person speaking about being holy as blah blah blah....even if I only wanted to hear them sing.

Loopy,
Why would the story he wrote make you not want to listen to Timothy Wright's CD.  I'm not understanding. ?/?
I like Timothy Wright, and I have been blessed by his music ministry.  Also his time will pass when God says so...I'm shocked that you would judge him and the situation and you weren't even there.

I am probably stepping over my boundaries by going "against" the well known members.  But I couldn't believe some of  the comments.

I've actually played FOR Wright and played with his sons.  I'm sorry that you didn't get what you wanted, but having worked with him, I know the stuff he's cut from.  Now, if he raised an offering after preaching and only giving you a song and a half, chances are someone on the other end didn't deliver what was promised.  When Wright stepped off the plane, we owed him NOTHING and the ministry was off the hook.  We rehearsed 5 songs and sung SEVEN.  They all had to get back to New York for service, yet when the service was over Wright & his sons stayed an extra hour teaching songs, chords, riffs, etc.

Again, I'm not talking about what I heard, I'm talking about what I know.  And I'm quite sure that if he gave you a song & a half, he probably only got PAID a song & a half.

But in the end, he's the one that looks bad.  Paid or not, you're there now, you mean to tell me you're gonna minister less, because somebody didn't do right by you?  I would say sing your heart out, do your best, and just don't go back if you weren't satisfied with the compensation.

People coming to church have nothing to do with you getting stiffed, all they see is what you present of yourself.   That may be the only time some of those folks will see Timothy Wright live, and believe me, it will be a lasting impression.

I'm not Loopy, but as for me, I wouldn't be to interested in his CD because he was comparing himself to Jakes.  If you are something, you do not have to convence people.  You are what you are.

Don't fool yourself.  This is where people miss the point.  His ministry is ALSO his mortgage.  Besides, if GOD told him to minister and not sing, you think he's going to be disobedient because YOU wanna hear 'I Won't Go Back?'  When he practiced with us, he preached for 2 hours before a note hit the air.

Clarification. I said nowhere in my post that the "story he wrote" made me not want to listen to his CD. I had heard the song AND the story well before now, so that had nothing to do with it. My comment about the CD is in response to the offering part, and about him saying how he was "just as anointed as T.D. Jakes". THAT'S what turns me off, and I have a right to have my opinions about when artists compare themselves to another.

The BIBLE says the he who compares himself to another is not wise. The same BIBLE, in the same book (Proverbs) says that you should let another man praise you, and NOT from your OWN lips.

I've been a gospel listener for a long time and have been a fan of Timothy Wright's work, but it's not the FIRST time that I have been turned off by something artists have said, particulary him and Richard "Mr. Clean" White (COGIC folks I'm sure can attest). I'm not "judging" BTW, I'm just going by what the man said out of his own mouth, and THAT'S MY OPINION.

Also, you're not over-stepping any boundaries my brother. We're just having a discussion, and you have a right to your opinion.  :)

P.S. I will still listen to the CD, as I'm sure theere's probably some good choir material on it. ;)

Artists need to learn that they need to do what they came to do. If you are supposed to sing then sing. If they wanted you to preach, and if you were supposed to preach, you would have been invited as a SPEAKER! If it was your OWN concert, that's different.

One thing I cannot stand is when singers get up to the mic and TALK TOO MUCH. Just sing already! Minister through song. It's one thing if you feel lead to exhort, but to full-fledge preach?? That's unnecessary, and DON'T tell me the artists don't have control over that.

Again this is just my opinion, but I can see why people would be upset if someone is the MUSICAL guest, and they PREACh for two hours, and they make a habit of doing this. If they feel the need to preach so much, then maybe they should just accept preaching engagements.

I sort of understand what you are saying here. In Years past, I've seen artist come all the way out here to california and went home not only empty handed but ended up losing money because the promoter stole the money. The promoters can turn around and make the artist look horrible before the people like they are just being spoiled brats. Thank God the gospel industry has learned a lot and uses a lot more business acumen then even 15 years ago

I learned that you don't let one persons opinion/ perception shape your reality. Especialy if you don't have one.

At best we can say NJthebishop, bro sorry you had that experience. It does not call NJ wrong or Wright wrong. It does not judge or pass negative thoughts against another man or woman of God.

None of us were there. How do we so easily get caught up in he said she said stuff???  :-\ :-\

Point taken.  That's why in OUR contract, we made sure that the 6,000 we paid got us at least 5 songs.  Because he worded that he wanted a specific amount & a specific treatment, it's only business savvy to make sure we got '5 songs'.
Yeah, I don't think you caught the intent of what I was trying to say.

Actually, I did.  And I was thinking along those lines but then it hit me.  'Those people really didn't wanna hear a word.  They wanted to hear their favorite song, and really could care less if he was compensated properly or not.'

YES, you can listen to a GOSPEL song and not GET A WORD.

Just don't confuse it with THE Word.  Some folks get up and quote a song lyric thinking it's a scripture, when it's nowhere to be found in the bible.

I agree this is very business savvy, and eliminates a lot of unnecessary confusion.

Not trying to Hi-jack but

Do you think artist will every simply Trust God to supply their needs according to His riches in Glory?

I pray that when God brings me to this level I can weather the storm long enough to see God do just what His word says He will do. Supply all my needs in music ministry.

Mang, I just wont pay a ticket to hear someone preach. I'll be salty. Now if the Holy spirit needs to move, thats another thing.
But I gets good preachin/teaching where I'm at. If go to a concert, I WANNA SEE A CONCERT. Give me my licks, riffs, runs, chordz, whatever u do. And if there's a healthy balance of song/logos/rhema, then to God be the glory.

But i wants my concert.
