I'm scared.....
« on: March 07, 2007, 10:10:40 PM »
O.K., listen to this and tell me what you think:

I have been playing piano for almost a year this August of 2007. I'm scared because our music minister, is going to be gone youth Sunday (3rd Sunday of this month). That means, if she's not here, then the youth choir has to sing. The rule is if the music minister is not here, the adult choir is not to march up and the youth takes over the morning service by ourself. I'm scared because we have only sang 3 times (4 if you count the very first time I played for them). We have to do the processional (march-in to the choir stands), the hymn, the....everything. I lost my piano teacher because she says I was better than her and she is a little bit bipolar so she's in the hospital. She says I'm better than her. But in reality to me, I'm not. I can barely do some songs by ear, I have to hit the key of the song with the original notes and then I transpose it to C, G, or F. Like if the song is in A-flat, you transpose up to +3 to play the song with F notes, but an A-flat sound. But anyway, I can barely pick up the key of songs. I read a little bit better than I hear by ear, but even my reading is terrible. I'll only look at the chord names and then just play the chord the way I think it should sound. And I only read in certain keys. C Major/A minor, F Major/D Minor, G Major/E minor, E-flat Major/C Minor, A-flat Major/F Minor, and B-flat Major/G Minor. Any other key, I'll try and listen to the song to pick out the chords for the transposing. I'm scared, yet again. And, on top of all that, they won't let me pick the songs, y'know? Won't let me pick what I know best. What I can play without any problems and difficulties. They just make me waste hot breath telling what I want them to learn because I know it, and then say "No, I don't want to do that." How are you going to make me learn something I'd have to have some one else teach me? And they don't let me direct the choir. I have to follow her, so whenever I get in the spirit, I have to remind myself you can't because then she'll get mad at you for going off and having the choir expect to follow you. But isn't the choir and director supposed to follow the musician or is it the other way around? Anyways, it's scary. Because the congregation is going to expect me to play like the music minister, and she plays....wonderful. If she would write her own song, man, top hit right there. If she wrote it and scored the music, whew! But, they're going to expect me to play like her and I can't do it. I'm not her. I'm nothing like her. I'm thinking about lying and saying I have something else to do that Sunday. I'm scared. Please someone give me some kind of advice. E-mail it to me: sunshine74013@yahoo.com. Please, somebody give me some kind of advice on what to do. And some kind of help on reading the chords on here, because I can't even read the chords and stuff on here, it's so difficult to me. Please, I'm only 14 doing this. I didn't think it'd be this tough, but it is. Please help me. Please.

PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!![move]

Well, to answer your question,  typically the musician follows the Director.  If they say vamp, you vamp. If they say bridge you go to the bridge. If they  say verse you take it to the verse.

But you should be honest and tell them that you only know certain songs and If they  don't want to sing those songs then you are not gong to be able to help them with the music.

Also, at least in my church, the directors and the musician pick music together.  What I mean is the directors pick what they want, and the musicians make the call if the song is do-able from a musical standpoint. Sometimes a song is complex and you have to work on it a little longer than other songs,  so you have to replace it with something else for that week.

But learning songs outside of the keys you normally play in is a good thing. It expands your vocabulary. But you shouldn't be forced to fumble through a song you don't know, but you need to be honest with your directors up front.  I personally wouldn't pull the no-show deal on the sunday you are supposed to play because it sets you up as being un-dependable.  Talk with your music minister and directors early  so everyone knows what the deal is.  Maybe  the choir could use a track fo some stuff and you could play the stuff that you know.

Also as a musician, your job is to "support" the vocalists. You shouldn't overplay your singers. If they go in, then you go in with the music.  If they hang back, then you hang back. Watch your director and follow their lead.

This is great, sound advice JLewis. I couldn't have said it better.

Sunshine - Take a deep breath. As nervous as you are, you are setting yourself up to implode. Just select songs that you are comfortable playing and prepare mentally and by practicing. Your minister of music should asist you with preparation and expectations. You are only 14, a novice. You'll gain confidence and valuable experience on Sunday. Also, don't forget to pray...:)

hey dude dont worry dude i have felt the same way you have before...i am also 14 about to be 15 and i have been playing for about 14 months and even though i am still an amateur at playing the piano i have expierence in playing because i ahev been playing lead piano for about2 months now... but uhh well let me tell you a story.........this happened about 8 months ago and i had to play at my church cus the lead pianist was gone and so i had to step up and i was just like you dude i only knew how to play in C and D and F and you know the white keys and soo the praise and worship leader wanted me too play some songs in Eb and F# and they were really hard for me then...so i used the trnspose button and play it in C and so she told me to stick to the chords and just get the chords down so i did....and then after we practiced i asked her "wut if the spirit starts moving?"...she said to stick to the chords and maybe put some little runs in there but just be sure of wut u r doing...so i did and evrything worked out great....so my advice to you is  just follow the leader and be sensitive to the spirit and pray....and u must follow the leader...and i understan the stress you are under you feel like you have to reach those expectations of wut has been set before you...and just chill and this all for the lord so just do you r thing man...and just like 1achord said you will gain expierence after this it will be worth it so do your thing man and pray and practice...
