Left Hand Chording

I have been playing the keyboard for about 6 mths now and I need to know if there are any exercises that would help me learn how to chord with both hands. I saw one video one this sight, but I need more.

Any suggestions?

The easiest, and I think one of the best exercises is to just ttransfer everything you do with your right hand into the left hand and just play the melody with the right.

this is what i do........sometime u may have a chord like Eb/DbGbBb in the key of C#..ok....when ever u have a chord like that (I call Off CHord) there is always a left hand chord that goes with it..... The left hand chord will be nuthin like the right hand chord. Ok this is wat u do.....Play Eb/DbGbBb...... as u hold down the Eb try 2 find another note. to do this while ur playing the Eb hit E then F then Gb and so on...as u hit the different notes play Eb along with it so u  will b playin EbE/ EbF/ Eb/Gb...u get the picture iight if u have done this correctly u will have found 2 notes that sound like they fit which will be EbGb/DbGbBb....now do the same thang again but this time hold down EbGb/ and hit G then Ab then A then Bb as u play EbGb/...if u have done this correctly u will have a chord on the left hand which would be EbGbBb/DbGbBb ..... That is how i find chords for the left hand

**this method works when u have an off bass with the chords on the right hand


** Sometimes theres no chord for the left hand so what u do is Double up ur chords like  ex. AbBbDbF/AbBbDbF



*************When u play a Diminished 7th chord there is alwayz a chord for the left 2 play......Here how u get the left hand chord


if u playing a Ebdim7th (/EbGbAC).....most people would play F/EbGbAC.... but there is a chord for it. To find the chord for the Dim7th wat u do is go down a 2 steps from the root note. Eb(root note of dimished)..so u would go down to F.... ok once u have gone down all u do is play the maj chord of the F (/FAC)... so all together u will have FAC/EbGbAC ...That is how you find the chord to a dimished7th chord.

I would agree with 4hisglory. LH chording is simple. One way of LH chording is to play the same thing as the RH. Another way is to use larger chords like 9ths and 13 chords. You can usually split this into two hands. The other way is to play a few notes from the RH chord in the LH. You can also play chord shells in your LH while chording with your RH.

There are these different ways but if you want to become efficient using your LH play as 4hisglory said with LH chords and the melody in the RH. If you know the bass line of a song use LH chords that match up with bassline of the progression. You are going to have to learn this style sooner or later.

This is the book way of learning LH chording. I wish I had learned that way first. You are not going to be able to solo properly if you cant play LH chord/melody style. You will be surprised at how well you learn your keys playing this style. What notes to hit and what notes not to hit.
