Timing is Everything: the 1st Global Sports List of 2007
« on: March 07, 2007, 11:07:09 AM »
So in ALL OF SPORTS what athletes fit into this catagory: Timing is everything. It can be any sport.

What athletes come to mind as a result of timing as oppose to natural ability.

Example:

Danny Manning - had Kansas not made that run in the NCAA Tournament we would not even know who he was. he was not even on the draft board before the tournament that year - Timing is everything. ::)

John Salley - 6 NBA Rings becuse he was on the right team at the right time. He was not a factor in 4 of those rings. - Timing is everything :-\

Because it's a name, I'm allowed to misspell it:

Christian Laettner - turn around jumper at the buzzer, in college, and NOW you're a superstar draft pick in the NBA?  ::)

Doug Williams - put Black QBs on the map? Yep.  Heard from after his miraculous season? Only at Grambling.  :-\

Mike Tyson - not really that good since he always fought mediocore dudes an dlost to the good ones but there was no reall heavy weight at the time

Lebron James - he is a result of KOBE not having the right mindset and the League needing a new Star puppet

Proper grammar has NOTHING to do with the spelling of a person's name.  ::)

Alex Smith.

The #1 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft was ONLY the #1 pick because it wasn't a good draft year.

He got #1 Draft pick MONEY...

Mmmmm....., I'd hold off on that one for a minute. He didn't have a terrible year last year. Let's see what happens next year.

I didn't say he's a BUST.

Even if he turns out to be a great pro, he wasn't a great prospect coming out of college, and he benefitted from a great draft

(If Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, Ben Rothlisberger were taken one year later, he wouldn't have been #1)

Rodney White.  I'm still waiting to see if he makes Joe Dumars pay, as he claimed he would, for trading his sorry butt....

It ain't gonna happen, son.

Got a couple of more

Dajuan Wagner ( was wrecking shop in high school, had one year of college and then made the jump to pro and was a bust for the cavaliers)

Sebastion telfair ( another dude who was killing everybody in High school, but has't made the jump successfully to the pros.  He might be one of the reasons the nba instituted the High school rule).

Eddie Curry

Vin Baker (although he had a couple of good years with seattle, but after he got the big contract, he disappeared)

I'm gonna bend the line of sports and bring up some "sports entertainment"...

Normally there isn't such a thing as a "bust" in "rasslin'".  If WWE or whatever organization decide that they want to push a personality, it gets pushed.  If they wanna take 'em down, they're through.  They're normally pretty good about putting the people that they hype in a good position, and if that person has enough skills he/she can make it flourish.

So who in the world of "rasslin'" could have possibly been a bust?

WCW's very own... Glacier.

Stupid from concept to execution (or lack thereof).  I remember those stupid promos for him that they'd play during Nitro, trying to build him up.  Glacier is coming!  OOOOOOOH, AAAAAAAAAAH.  When he finally showed up, he was worse than disliked... he was practically non-existant.  No pop, no boos, no nothing.  A waste of time and space.

Ok, now back to real sports.

Andre Ware.

Lions WRs drafted by Matt Millen.

Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson.  Held out for and got that ridiculous contract, probably the biggest bust of all on a per dollar ratio.

Joakim Noah's draft stock won't be as high as it was when he could have bailed last year.  Timing is indeed everything.

Then again, he doesn't care, his folks are already millionaires and he's just a different kind of cat.
