Highest Voice Note
« on: January 26, 2007, 02:57:33 PM »
I was looking at the entry for Karen Clark Sheard on Wikipedia and it says her highest voice note is D6.  What does the 6 mean?  Does it mean the 6th D on the keyboard?

I believe that the D6 means the D note in the 6th octave.  It may not be specific to a keyboard, since keyboards are different.  I think it refers to an 88 key piano, with every C note signifying a change in octave.  The first C key on the 88key piano is C1.  From that C note, you can count up to the D6 note.  Hope this helps. :)

Thanks, Eagle Eyez.  That's what I was thinking, but I just wanted to make sure.

Middle C is C3 so it is 3 octaves above the middle C.

This didn't sound right to me, because I thought C3 was below middle C.  So this is what I found.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_C

It basically says that middle C is usually referred to as C4.  This generalization can change though depending on the frame of reference or even the instrument.  But for an 88-key piano, middle C would be C4.

Wikipedia is just too crazy.

That information is incorrect.  On my keyboard with 88 keys, each C is marked with middle C being C3.  If middle C is C4, I can hit notes higher than Karen if all she can hit is a D6 ;)

No check again.  Middle C is in fact C4.  An 88 key piano goes up to C8 with C4 being the middle C key and C1 being the lowest C key.

Well, VT, what do you have to say to that? ;)
